Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Dink’s father has brought him and his two friends, Josh and Ruth Rose, to London. The fourth grade trio explores the city on their own while Mr. Duncan attends his conference. As they tour Madame Tussauds Wax Museum they discover that the Queen’s jewels have been stolen by two people dressed like her grandsons, Prince William and Prince Henry. The young sleuths head to Windsor Castle, the scene of the crime, to look for clues. They encounter the Queen herself walking her dogs on the grounds and talk to her about the incident. As they begin to take notice of people who could have been disguised at the Princes, they follow a few false clues before unraveling the mystery. A Scotland Yard detective appears and the youngsters assist in the arrest of the culprits. As a result, they are invited to have tea with the Queen and to ride in a helicopter with the Princes. This is a fun story for beginning readers, although it does stretch credibility. Three nine year-olds wandering around London on their own and chancing to have a private conversation with the Queen when she is walking her dogs in the rain is a bit far-fetched. Part of the “A to Z Mysteries” series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.; Ages 5 to 8.
