Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
"Pure fun all the way," said PW in a starred review of this tale about a cat longing for the canine life. Ages 3-7. (Mar.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
"I wish I were a dog!" So thinks the orange-striped tabby with the white spot on the end of her tail, heroine of this delightfully rhymed picture book. The world seems to be the canine species' oyster. Dogs, after all, can do exciting things that cats can't; they can bark, howl, growl, play in the park, catch crooks and even be movie stars. The cat's understanding owner, however, reminds the kitty of everything she can do that dogs can't. "Please, stay just as you are—a most wonderful cat," begs the little girl. The vibrant illustrations accentuate the excitement of cat (and dog) life. The colors are brilliant and the illustrations themselves are a quirky blend of cut paper, collage, paint, pen and pencil that abound with visual jokes. They are sure to capture and hold a child's attention with or without the read-aloud text. This book successfully uses humor to reinforce the important concept that the best thing to be is simply one's self. 2001 (orig. 1999), Puffin Books/Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, $13.99 and $5.99. Ages 3 to 6. Reviewer: Stephanie Farrow
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A bright-orange tabby feels that dogs have all the fun and yearns to be one (especially, it seems, a small black terrier). A wide-eyed, red-haired girl reminds her pet that dogs have to do all sorts of silly stunts such as roll over and fetch sticks, while cats do wonderful things like nap and climb trees. A simple message of self-acceptance is subtly presented in the short, rhymed narrative. Early readers will be able to manage most of the easy text, and will also be challenged by some new words. Monks brings humor and character to the animals in her stylish paint-and-collage illustrations. The pictures utilize lively and saturated colors, with vibrant backgrounds of green, pink, yellow, and lilac. Some of the illustrations are full of details, while others feature large, double-page close-ups of the characters. The endpapers are decorated with different dog breeds in the front and a variety of cats in the back. A pedigree choice for animal lovers and for storytime sharing.-Angela J. Reynolds, West Slope Community Library, Portland, OR
Kirkus Reviews
This candy-colored tribute to cats starts with a particular cat bemoaning, in verse, its lot compared to a dog's life. Dogs go for those long walks, yip and yap, chase crooks, and get all the plum roles in Hollywood. Then the cat's mistress intervenes: "Silly old cat,/If your wish did come true,/You'd have to do things/You wouldn't want to do." Chewing bones, being led around on a leash, fetching, and performing silly tricks are among the disadvantages mentioned; next, the advantages are enumerated, such as seeing in the dark, catching mice, climbing trees, pouncing, and "In sunny spots and soft places/Cats like to take naps,/And they're just the right size/For cuddling in laps." Readers will be firmly converted to the superiority of the cat's life, and pleasingly distracted by the high-wattage collage artwork. (Picture book. 3-7) .
