Richard Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was a prolific British detective writer who prospered during the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction" during the 1920s and 1930s. Trained as a physician, Freeman applied his medical knowledge to his most famous character, fictional detective Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke. Freeman invented the "inverted detective story" and produced more than sixty novels and short stories during his long career.
