Overview

In June of 1870, seventy-five Chinese laborers arrived in North Adams, Massachusetts, to work for Calvin Sampson, one of the biggest industrialists in that busy factory town. Except for the foreman, the Chinese didn’t speak English. They didn’t know they were strikebreakers. The eldest of them was twenty-two.

Combining historical and fictional elements, The Celestials beautifully reimagines the story of Sampson’s “Chinese experiment” and the effect of the newcomers’ threatening and exotic presence on the New England locals. When Sampson’s wife, Julia, gives birth to a mixed-race baby, the infant becomes a lightning rod for the novel’s conflicts concerning identity, alienation, and exile.

Ooh! If ya could, could ya add Fierymoon? He's a bright silver &male with fiery orange eyes and iridescent black crane-like wings. Family and history. . . Only family he had was Vacantsky, and she is dead now. Fierymoon has a quiet, depressed personality and he cannot move his left wing.

    CelestialClan's Destiny Chapter 8 ~Rose

[Why is no one commenting? Exept Star, barely any of you are. I apoligize if I'm not posting soon enough, but please keep reading. When I started this, I had 6 people in the first hour. Now I get 1 in a day. It just makes me feel sad, so please keep commenting.]

"Nooo!" Sky's yowl seemed like a bolt of lightning in a sky of gray clouds. "You can't be dead!" Lily's body lay limp on the ground. Sky ran over to his sister and hugged her tightly. Raindrop-sized tears rolled down his face. Dovepale sat silently her eyes clouded with sadness. Dusksong walked toward the corner and sobbed quietly.

"I let her die," she sobbed. "I couldn't heal her. I am so sorry."

Twilight knew she had to fix this. "I'm - I'm sorry too," she began. "But we can't just cry like this. Nothing magical is going to happen. We just have to continue with our daily lives." She paused and turned to Dusksong. "You can't dwell on the past, instead we need to think of the future. Don't worry about what you didn't do. Think of what you will do next time so it doesn't happen again."

Dusksong looked up. She wiped the tears out of her green eyes. "Ok," she whispered. "But can we do something for Lily before she goes off to, cat heaven?"

"That's a good idea. Like a ritual. We should bury her body," Twilight responded. She turned back to Sky who was still standing over Lily's body. "How does that sound? She was your sister."

"Ok. We can bury her before she goes to StarClan," Sky answered quietly. "That's actually not a bad idea."

"StarClan? What's that?" Twilight questioned. Her violet eyes clouded in confusion.

"Did your mother never tell you the story of StarClan?" Twilight nodded her head in a no. Mysteryflower had never mentioned this StarClan, although she had died quite early. "StarClan is like a heaven where only the bravest of cats go. CelestialClan is full of brave cats. All of us deserve to go to StarClan one day. We will be almost living a second life, only tht the second life would be perfect."

"Hmm," Twilight thought. "Do we have to bury her before she gets to this StarClan?" Twilight's eyes drifted over to Lily's lifeless body. It was limp and dirty. "Maybe we should groom her one more time?"

"That sounds good," Leaf meowed. "We should bring her to the center of camp." Leaf began to lift Lily's body onto his back. Twilight and Dusksong ran to help him. Together, they carried Lily's body out of the medicine den, and into the middle of camp. As they ley go of her body, murmers rippled throughout camp. Most of apology and sadness, but some of curiosity.

Leaf slowly groomed Lily's pelt for the last time. He whispered his last words of brotherly love. Twilight decided to give him some time. It was almost dark and Twilight soon realized they couldn't bury Lily today.

"Why don't we sit vigil for her tonight. Leaf, being Lily's brother, you can stay with her. Tomorrow morning we'll bury her body," Twilight decided.

She sat down next to Lily's body and let her mind wander. She felt she had done a good job handling the situation. Now everyone was feeling ok, amd she had started a new ritual. She had felt like a real leader.
