Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The sea has taken everything away from Periwinkle; it has drowned her fisherman father and left her mother barely able to cope. So Periwinkle, a chambermaid at the inn of a small fishing village, decides to hex the sea. It works surprisingly well, disrupting the sea queen's magic. A chained sea monster appears from the depths, and the king's melancholy son, Kir, nearly drowns trying to get to the country under the sea. With the help of the magician Lyo, Periwinkle uncovers and reverses the sea queen's curse. Beautifully sustained metaphors and an even tone make this fantasy, like McKillip's The Forgotten Beasts of Eld , a pleasure to read. Further, McKillip's deft characterization and smooth, tender resolution result in a memorable, often poignant novel. Ages 10-up. (September)
From The Critics
Young and innocent, Peri learns life's lessons through the disappearance of her father, her mother's sulking, and finding a new home in a mystic cottage by the sea. One day in a fit of anger, Peri curses the sea for destroying her life and complete turmoil occurs. The greedy villagers are in an uproar over a sea dragon with a gold chain, and the sea plays rotten tricks on the fishers. From this chaos, it seems that only true love can solve all of their problems. With a touch of romance, Patricia McKillip weaves an enchanting tale that will especially appeal to young ladies, ages ten to thirteen. The author captures a world that lies somewhere between reality and fantasy. She also puts a new twist on the old adage that true love conquers all. 2003 (orig. 1988), Penguin Putnam,

    Eerily, Incandescently Magical

Patricia McKillip has a tendency to write dangerous magic books; while there are wondrous things, there is always a dark edge to them, a feeling that not everything will turn out okay, that there is a side of pain to all the wonder. This is not to say that there are no "happily ever afters" in her books, just that there is always suspense when they come, and always an undercurrent of sadness as well.

"The Changling Sea" is no exception to this style, which elevates it from its slim length and young adult label to an excellent book. Boiled down, it sounds like a melodramatic romance book, but is no such thing in execution. The main character, Peri--short for Periwinkle--is both practical and romantic, an angry girl who tries to hex the sea for killing her father and making her mother lose her mind. Her life becomes even more complicated when a magician, a prince, and a strange sea monster enter it.

I read this book over ten years ago and recently made the effort to find it again, so I would certainly recommend it.

One of the best fantasy books you will ever read!

If you like stories of mermaids or selkies, this is definitely the right book for you. This is the first book I have read by Patricia Mckillip and I loved it. It is very beautifully written. Mckillip's characters have very different and unique personalities that can be related to. Everything in the book is detailed, but not so much so that some things can be left to the reader's imagination. I recommend this to anyone who loves good fantasy books.

    unpredictable

An unexpected love story in the middle of a magical, seaside setting. You won't be able to predict the ending!

    A MUST !

The Changeling Sea is a book that never left me wanting in rereading it. The sense of wonder of Peri in her findings at magic and growing up are so entwisted that even when you known what is going to happen, there is still time to be musing upon a image or stoping to gasp upon a clever turn of words, because it´s cease to be Peri´s feeling and became yours, and the reader is back to the teens and all the confusion of first love

    Not only for younger kids!

I agree with the last reviewer, I read this book when I was 15 and loved it, though one of the editorial reviews said it would be more suitable for 10-13 year olds. I would recommend this book for any girl or young woman who enjoys fantasy stories.

How am I the only person to write a review on this great book?

I love The Changeling Sea! It's very imaginative and wimsical. Anybody could read this. It's very fairy tale-ish and charming. This should be required reading for all 6th graders. I might be a teenager, but everyone cherishes at least one fairy tale or childhood story no matter what your age.
