A simple version of the Christmas story.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Blocks of bold color, loose black line, and plenty of smiling faces make Slegers's paintings a fine pairing for her simplified retelling of the Nativity story. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, "The shepherds and kings were amazed. They could see the newborn Jesus! The shepherds gave him a cuddle. The kings gave him their gifts." Such childlike freshness and accessibility should give this joyous volume broad appeal. Up to age 3. (Oct.)

School Library Journal
PreS—This is a short version of the Nativity story, told in simple language that very young children can understand. "They hugged and kissed their little baby. And they covered him with straw to keep him warm." The cheerful, colorful paintings, rendered in primary colors with bold outlines, feature childlike animals and smiley-faced Biblical people. This is a fine choice for sharing with toddlers and preschoolers one-on-one, as well as in a religious preschool storytime.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews

The simple but striking cover of this Nativity story effectively employs an overhead view of a smiling baby against a plain red background with the title standing out in white type. Slegers uses a palette of joyful, rich hues in her exuberant paintings, rendered in a flattened, naïve style reminiscent of children's drawings. The volume's thoughtful design uses just a few sentences of simple text, skillfully and simply relating the basic narrative of the Christ Child's birth in language young children can understand. The conclusion relates the gifts of the Magi to gifts given on Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and the final illustration shows a happy child opening a Christmas package. Few Christmas books connect the Nativity story to the contemporary celebration of the holiday in such an accessible and cheerful way. (Picture book/religion. 3-6)
