Humanity’s last hop hinges on a magical talisman—the Pica Stone. One of only nine solid objects ever created by magic, the Pica Stone was shattered in the days of the last Wizards. But when Captain, oldest of the elves, joins with his fellow light elves to work a spell to darw together all the scattered pieces of this legendary gem, eight shards remain missing, lost on worlds throughout the planes of existence.

The elves spell-shift a party of questers to each of these worlds to find the shards. Among the chosen are: the Renshai warrior Kevral, her husband Ra-khir the knight, and Tae, a newly made prince and former thief. Each world offers unique challenges, but with the extinction of the human race as the price of failure, there can be no turning back....

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Praise for the Renshai Chronicles:

“Delightful fantasy, featuring sympathetic characters, magical battles galore, edge-of-seat suspense, and truly impressive worldbuilding. Complex, intricate, by turns challenging and rewarding, this is ultimately quite a satisfying fantasy reading experience.” —VOYA

“Reichert has the uncanny ability to sustain unremitting horror and suspense—for over 700 pages, mind.... Altogether magnificent. The tangled interrelationships, including a tangled romance, are as fascinating as her enthusiastic descriptions of bloody, bloody battles. Her mastery of military matters is quite incredible.” —Kliatt

“[Reichert’s] most ambitious and satisfying work to date.” —SF Chronicle

“Handled with literary skill and folkloric scholarship that further raises the level of suspense.” —Booklist

“[Reichert’s] best book to date and one of the best fantasy reads of the year.... Excellent high fantasy.” —South Bend Tribune
VOYA - Bonnie Kunzel
In this final installment of The Renshai Chronicles, the thief Tae Kahn, now heir to the Eastern Empire; the Renshai warrior, Kevral; and her newlywed husband, the knight, go on their most important quest yet. The dark elves have cast an infertility spell that can only be broken by the magic Pica Stone, which has been shattered and its shards scattered across a number of worlds. The three join a group of companions who must travel to these various worlds, fight magical battles, risk their lives against innumerable perils, and bring back the shards, with the fate of mankind resting upon them. To make matters even more challenging, Kevral is pregnant and her former captor, the King of Pudar, insists that the unborn child is heir to his throne and must be turned over to him. The half-mortal son of Colby Calistinsson, legendary Renshai hero, is actually the father of her baby, but Kevral may have to give up the infant to preserve the precarious peace in the land. In the meantime, Colby has his own problems. Odin has returned and is now in possession of the staff of law. He has also managed to convince the other gods that Colby has bonded with the staff of chaos and is a threat to them all. As the gods try to kill Colby, Odin waits in the wings, ready to create a new world which will mean the destruction of all life forms, humans as well as elves, unless Colby is able to defeat him. This delight for quest fans is the shortest of the three volumes (only 516 pages!) and provides a satisfying conclusion to a rich, complex fantasy world. The author successfully juggles the many characters, paints a vivid picture of the various locations involved in the quest, and navigates the world of Norse mythology with a sure hand. VOYA Codes: 4Q 4P S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, Broad general YA appeal, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
Kirkus Reviews
Concluding volume of the trilogy (Prince of Demons and Beyond Ragnarok, not reviewed) whose backdrop is a dubious concoction of Norse gods, Celtic myth, and family saga, embroidered with standard fantasy designs. Here, the elves must save the world by re-creating the shattered gem known as the Pica Stone. Unfortunately, eight shards are scattered on eight different planes of existence, so a quest must be organized to retrieve them. Among the familiar characters chosen for the quest will be: warrior Kerval and her husband, the knight Ra-khir; Kerval's other significant other, the prince and former thief Tae, along with light elves, warriors, and a street urchin who immediately gets lost. Even if the quest succeeds, there'll be a battle among the gods of Asgard, as Odin squares up to Colbey (don't ask, okay?). Full-body immersion for fans of the trilogy, who clearly prefer their narratives sluggish, talky, and prone to dwell on the insignificant.
