School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-William J. Bennett's (The Children's Book of Virtues) latest title (Doubleday, 2000) provides a wide array of spiritual stories, including Bible stories, legends of saints, stories of hymns, poems and prayers. The stories are nicely narrated by husband-wife team Barrie Youngfellow and Sam Freed, and the short entries are written in an easy to understand language that will appeal to general listening audiences. The title has little continuity, and no indexing, which makes it difficult to use with groups or in church school lessons. One major drawback to the title is the introductory material, read by Bennett, which is directed at adults, not the intended audience. Without it, the stories would make a fine "loop" for family audiences and devotional studies. Libraries which circulate a fair amount of Bennett's other works may wish to acquire this title, but most libraries can do without it.-Kirsten Martindale, Buford Academy, GA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
