“The October Daye series has become one of my favorites, and it just keeps getting better and better.” —Fantasy Book Café

Things are starting to look up for October “Toby” Daye. She’s training her squire, doing her job, and has finally allowed herself to grow closer to the local King of Cats. It seems like her life may finally be settling down…at least until dead changelings start appearing in the alleys of San Francisco, killed by an overdose of goblin fruit.

Toby’s efforts to take the problem to the Queen of the Mists are met with harsh reprisals, leaving her under sentence of exile from her home and everyone she loves. Now Toby must find a way to reverse the Queen’s decree, get the goblin fruit off the streets—and, oh, yes, save her own life, since more than a few of her problems have once again followed her home. And then there’s the question of the Queen herself, who seems increasingly unlikely to have a valid claim to the throne….

To find the answers, October and her friends will have to travel from the legendary Library of Stars into the hidden depths of the Kingdom of the Mists—and they’ll have to do it fast, because time is running out. In Faerie, some fates are worse than death.

October Daye is about to find out what they are.

“McGuire applies a hard-boiled mentality and a keen appreciation for mythology to a blend of politics, magic, and romance.” —Publishers Weekly

“The October Daye series is one of those delicious worlds that becomes more and more beloved with each visit…. I couldn’t be happier.” —All Things Urban Fantasy

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In the seventh installment of McGuire’s increasingly entertaining urban fantasy series (after Ashes of Honor), half-Fae private detective October “Toby” Daye is up against her old nemesis, the Queen of the Mists. The queen gives Toby three days to pack up and leave San Francisco forever after Toby uncovers the queen’s involvement in a drug-pushing operation targeting changelings. Toby’s one hope comes when she discovers that Her Majesty’s claim to the throne may not be entirely legitimate. Now Toby and her allies must track down the true heir and overthrow the powerful monarch before Toby’s exile deadline. The urgency of the ticking clock works well with the political intrigue, Toby’s newfound vulnerability (following a truly diabolical ambush), and the setting’s ever-expanding mythology. Certain plot payoffs and emotional beats further reward longtime readers, making this a truly satisfying entry. Agent: Diana Fox, Fox Literary. (Sept.)
Locus
“Lots of portal hopping, visits to some of Toby’s old friends, and some deadly encounters keep things lively as the tension builds to a dramatic conclusion.”
RT Book Reviews
"Fast-paced, without ever being frantic, with excellent characterization.... McGuire is a dab hand at dialogue, and the bantering between Toby and everyone—especially Tybalt—is one of the highlights of the book."
Felicia Day
"This installment bumped this series up to the top of my urban-paranormal series list! … Highly recommend it, can't wait for the next! Of all the "Faerie" urban fantasy series out there, I enjoy this one the most. If you like the Dark Fever series or Kate Daniels series, you'll def like this one."
All Things Urban Fantasy
"The October Daye series is one of those delicious worlds that becomes more and more beloved with each visit, and Ashes of Honor is my favorite of this series to date."
SF Signal
"[McGuire] tells her story with energy and charm.... It’s all so much fun."
Owlcat Mountain
"Strong and evocative.... It has everything you could want: strong characters, detailed settings, and an engrossing plot."
The Ranting Dragon
"With Ashes of Honor, McGuire has crafted a deeply personal and intense story that will keep you on the edge, hoping to be pushed over. In my opinion, it is, hands down, the best Toby to date."
CC2K
"I love that Toby is a strong, independent—yet still vulnerable—heroine. I love that this is a world where people die, where consequences matter. I love the complex world-building and mythology. I love the almost film noir tone of the series. I love that each book leaves me wanting more. If you dig urban fantasy, this is one of the best out there."
Library Journal
Half-human, half-Faerie October "Toby" Day treads a fine line between her Faerie existence and her life in her earthly home of San Francisco. When local changelings begin dying from overdosing on goblin fruit, Toby must stop the problem or else bear the wrath of the Queen of the Mists, who has no love for her anyway.

Meet the Author

Seanan McGuire is a California-based author with a strong penchant for travel, and can regularly be found just about anyplace capable of supporting human life (as well as a few places that probably aren't). Early exposure to a vast number of books left her with a lifelong affection for the written word, and led, perhaps inevitably, to her writing books of her own, starting somewhere around the age of eleven. The October Daye novels are her first published fantasy series. The InCryptid novels are her second urban fantasy series for DAW. Both an artist and an accomplished, independent folk musician and song writer, Seanan shares her California farmhouse with a wide variety of books, musical instruments, local wildlife, and Siamese and Maine Coon cats. She holds packed concerts at her book signings in stores like Borderlands.

So GOOD! .  This is truly a series that is unique and unpredictable.  The characters, storyline, and
overall setting are still very fresh and exciting at book 7!!!!  This series has in no way slowed down.  Toby is one of my all time
favorite heroines.  (Talk about growth and development.) AND I have loved Tybalt since the first book (He is not your typical Alpha.)
This adventure was very different from her previous installments, but the suspense, creativity, and WIT is in full force.
Definitely have to ready books in order!

    Wonderful

This book is a changing point in the series. The short story at the end of the book hinted heavily of that. The characters are well written and I truly love all the back and forth banter with October. I love that Tybalt and October's relationship has progressed and I hope to see more alone time for them in the next book.

Another fabulous book from a must-read author!

This series gets better and better - The heroine is smart and funny, the romance fresh, and the surprises are endless. I hate having to wait for the next book, but its always worth it. This is one of those series that is good enough to read over and over again and each new installment is like a visit with old friends. Buy this book; you won't regret it!

Goblin fruit has taken root in San Francisco, killing off the ½ bloods and changelings. October “Toby” Daye is shocked when she takes this problem before the Queen of the Mist only to finds herself sentenced to exile.

A race against the clock ensues for Toby to come up with a plan to keep herself out of exile while fighting her most difficult battle yet...and it all started with a pie in the face.

Chimes at Midnight finally gives our fantastic heroin, Toby, proof beyond a doubt that she has friends that have her back. If you have a favorite October Daye character, chances are they had a role in this story, Seanan McGuire pulls out all the stops and brings everyone into this imaginative plot.

I loved this story. Heart pounding action, riveting revelations, incredible imaginative twists and turns and all the characters we've come to love.
