Popular children's book team Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees present another irresistible rhyming, fun-to-read story!

The chimpanzees of Drabsville are miserable. The wicked mayor won't allow them to have any fun! Playgrounds, trees, and colors other than gray are outlawed in their gloomy town. However, when a traveler named Chutney dares to plant a tree, Drabsville begins to blossom into a colorful land of dancing, playing, and laughing. There's only one name for such a place--Happytown!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
First published in Britain, this exuberant tale with its perfectly (well, almost) scanning verse and its energetic cartoon characters brings to mind a Dr. Seuss fable in Technicolor. Chutney, a chimpanzee wearing a purple vest and carrying a bright, striped umbrella and a guitar arrives in Drabsville—gray, dull, and full of miserable chimpanzees. When he plants a magic seed he's brought, it sprouts into a flowering tree, but the manic mayor of Drabsville has Chutney arrested. How the tree is saved and Chutney transforms the town makes for a rousing tale as Parker-Rees's illustrations get more gaudily glowing with each page. When Chutney stirringly proclaims: "Let's make our houses colorful. / Let's pull our fences down," the chimpanzees enter into the spirit of madness, painting their gray abodes with purples, pinks, and yellows, while the newly christened Happytown blossoms with flowers and greenery. Kids will have fun checking out the children's playground full of giant fruit and a red rocket ship and then exploring the street fair with a rock band, dancing, and plenty of sausage, watermelon, and ice cream. In the final spread, they can see the dull shops full of lamps, cleaning supplies, anonymous cans, and gray umbrellas turned into a kite boutique, a bakery, a toy shop, and a florist. As Chutney optimistically explains to the ex-mayor, "Everything that we cut down / will find a way to grow. / And things will always blossom / if we dare to set them free." If only it were so easy!
