Overview

The Chinaman understands death. Jungle-skilled, silent, and lethal, he had killed for the Viet Cong and then for the Americans, and he had watched helplessly when his two eldest daughters had been raped and killed by Thai pirates. But that was all behind him. Quiet, hardworking, and unassuming, the Chinaman had been building up a take-away food business when his wife and youngest daughter were caught by an IRA bomb in a department store. Simply but persistently, the Chinaman asked the authorities about who had set the bomb. After he is turned away by the authorities and treated as a nuisance, he decides there is only one path before him. The Chinaman, denied justice, decides he must take revenge into his own hands, and declares war.

A series of vicious bombings in London propels this action-packed novel. (Apr.)
Library Journal
A renegade group of IRA terrorists are busy stealing Semtex-H, a Czechoslovakian explosive originally made for the North Vietnamese, and then using it to blow up highly populated places in and around London. In the first bombing, the wife and daughter of Nguyen Ngoc Minh are killed. Nguyen, a former assassin for the Viet Cong and later demolitions expert for the U.S. Army, wants revenge. When the police and the IRA refuse to give him names that even they do not know, he begins a campaign of fear against Liam Hennessey, a highly placed lawyer with the Sinn Fein. Juggling at least four separate plotlines and a host of vivid characters, fourth-time novelist Leather writes a story that is a roller coaster ride of true suspense. The Chinaman is a gem of a thriller, perfectly constructed and full of the unexpected.-- Jo Ann Vicarel, Cleveland Heights-University Heights P.L., Ohio

One of the most exciting, heart-pounding thrillers I’ve read in some time. If you like edge-of-your-seat suspense from beginning to end, THE CHINAMAN is the story for you. Another home run for Stephen Leather.

This is one of the best payback stories I've ever read: a former VC guerilla, former US ally and a survivor of Thai boat pirates having members of his family slain by an IRA bomb after they've all become expatriates in the UK and what happens when a peaceful man who was once a professional combatant gets zero help from the British authorities so he then brings a gruesome, unforgiving war back to the IRA. Spare enough time for this one because typical of Stephen's other works, once you get started with THE CHINAMAN, you won't want to be finishing it much before The End shows up far-too-quickly!
