The Chinchilla Farm

Overview

Raised a Mormon in a small town in Utah, married to a stiflingly conventional adulterer, Verna Flake has gotten tired of pretending. So she heads for Los Angeles, where people have the freedom to find themselves over and over again. In this lyrical and keenly observant novel Judith Freeman captures the solitude, the dislocation, and the offbeat optimism of the American West in a way that raises comparison with writers like Louise Erdrich and Bobbie Ann Mason.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The story of a middle-aged novelist troubled by encounters with a past lover and a young prostitute. (June)
Library Journal
This appealing novel follows the fortunes of thirtyish Verna Flake Fields, who lives an unremarkable life in a small Utah town until her husband walks out. Lacking cash, possessions, and any notable educational or social advantages, Verna quits her job at the bowling alley and heads for Los Angeles in search of better things. As she wanders, she retains her sense of place, grounded in affecting recollections of her large Mormon family. In the City of Angels she finds excitement and eventually fulfillment through offbeat adventures with a group of eccentrics that include a world-weary but attractive musicologist, a homeless park dweller, and a mercurial sister-in-law. Deft plotting, convincing dialogue, and memorable characters make this very satisfying. Recommended.-- Starr E. Smith, Georgetown Univ. Lib., Washington, D.C.
