Following her bestselling debut novel Come Away with Me, Karma Brown returns with an unforgettable story that explores the intricate dynamics of friendship and parenthood

Hannah and Kate became friends in the fifth grade, when Hannah hit a boy for looking up Kate's skirt with a mirror. While they've been close as sisters ever since, Hannah can't help but feel envious of the little family Kate and her husband, David, have created—complete with two perfect little girls.

She and Ben have been trying for years to have a baby, so when they receive the news that she will likely never get pregnant, Hannah's heartbreak is overwhelming. But just as they begin to tentatively explore the other options, it's Kate's turn to do the rescuing. Not only does she offer to be Hannah's surrogate, but Kate is willing to use her own eggs to do so.

Full of renewed hope, excitement and gratitude, these two families embark on an incredible journey toward parenthood…until a devastating tragedy puts everything these women have worked toward at risk of falling apart. Poignant and refreshingly honest, The Choices We Make is a powerful tale of an incredible friendship and the risks we take to make our dreams come true.

Kirkus Reviews
In a novel exploring the fragile ties of friendship, love, and family, Brown (Come Away With Me, 2015) takes on the loaded subject of surrogate motherhood between a pair of best friends—and the unforeseen turmoil and tragedy that result. Hannah and Kate have been linked at the hip since fifth grade, and they possess the sort of easy intimacy—a constant daily connection—that some only find with family members or spouses and some find, well, never at all. Both in their mid-30s and happily ensconced in Bay Area homes with sweet, doting husbands, just one thing mars their otherwise idyllic-seeming friendship: the fact that Hannah and her husband, Ben, have been frantically trying to conceive for years, while Kate and husband David are already parents to two young daughters. Hannah wants to become a mother so badly, the subject of other people's babies can transform her into a seething pit of envy and pain. After a fresh round of fertility tests in which her doctor essentially tells Hannah to start looking into other options, she's understandably shattered. She has an off-putting aversion to adoption, which Brown doesn't really bother to explain, so Hannah immediately begins mulling over hiring a surrogate. When Kate steps up to the plate instead, offering not only to carry the baby, but her own eggs as well, Hannah and Ben find little reason to say no, and they excitedly begin the process. Kate quickly gets pregnant using Ben's sperm (it's a boy!), and everything moves along promisingly—until a series of dramatic health crises befall Kate, threatening to derail, well, everything. Lawyers become involved, as do protesters, and the four friends' bonds are tested to a degree no one would wish on a distant enemy. A compelling premise with a plot that intensifies satisfyingly in the second half, this book is a good bet for readers who don't shy away from difficult moral questions swirling around a sometimes-sappy center.

Normally I read a different type of book but sometimes I am in the mood for a good "real life" book. I stumbled across this book and was hooked when reading the sample! It's been a long time since I have been so absorbed in a book that I read for hours. This book grabbed me and pulled me in with what can be a true life experience and the relationship between Kate and Hannah. I will be reading the other book by Karma Brown and hopefully there will be many future books!

Wow. From the Author's Note to the end of the story, this book grabbed hold of me and never let go. Brown explores the depths of friendship, love, family, and connection with such beauty and emotion. The reader gets to know the characters so well and gets a deep look at what's going on inside as they navigate very tricky waters. This book is both heartbreaking and hopeful with just the right blend to make it one you can't put down. Can't wait to go back and read her first book, COME AWAY WITH ME, next!

How much are your friendships worth to you? How much are you willing to give to your best friend to stop her agony and pain? Two lifelong best friends share the greatest gift anyone could give to another in Karma Brown’s emotionally charged The Choices We Make. Kate has been blessed with children, a loving husband and her best friend, Hannah. Hannah craves the joy of parenthood with Ben, but having exhausted every avenue, she is left devastated and broken. Kate took her love and friendship to the limits and beyond when she made the decision to be a surrogate mother for Hannah. This is their story, a story of grief, loss, determination and the ultimate gift of love. There was no way for me to prepare for the effect Karma Brown’s writing would have on me. I went from emotionally drained to elated to fearful to unpleasantly numb, not sure what was appropriate to feel until I took an honest look at the message behind this tale. I ended up grateful for the opportunity to read something as powerful and heartfelt as The Choices We Make. Ms. Brown has brought a contemporary issue to life and colored it beautiful, real and one of the most amazing books I have read lately. The entertainment value is in the message, the depths of the relationships between the characters and the pure love that they all shared. I’m not sure how many tissues I went through, but Ms. Brown’s writing was worth every tear. This is a diamond just waiting to sparkle on your bookshelf. This is the book you give as a gift to a best friend, it will say all you cannot express. I received this copy from Harlequin Mira in exchange for my honest review.

The Choices We Make is the story of when your best friend is willing to have a baby for you but at what cost. Hannah and Kate have been best friends since the 5th grade but with Kate happily married to David and having two little girls, Hannah is a little jealous that she and her husband, Ben can't get pregnant at all. Once Hannah and Ben receive news that getting pregnant just isn't in the cards for them, they start exploring other options until Kate offers the chance of a lifetime for them. It takes one moment for something to go wrong with Kate that will leave Hannah fighting for her unborn baby with an ending that will leave a tear in your eye. WOW is all I can say for this book, it will have you going from happiness to sadness in a blink of an eye and you feel for what every person is going through at the time. After reading this book, I just had to take a minute and think about this whole book and I'm gonna have to warn you, it will leave you with tears in your eyes knowing this is what a true friendship does for each other. You can bet that I'm gonna be a Karma Brown fan from now on just to experience reading a book that makes you feel all kinds of things!! Thank You to Karma Brown for writing this book that made me fall in love with your books!! I received this book from the BookSparks Summer Reading Challenge 2016 in exchange for a honest review.
