Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Katie Kemple
Christmas traditions correspond to the letters of the alphabet in this charming reissue of a 1962 Little Golden Book classic filled with cherub-faced children; a plump Santa; and festive toys, trees and food. Wilkin's illustrations depict popular Christian and secular holiday scenes of angels, choirboys, reindeer and presents. Excited children rush from snow-covered country homes to mailboxes stuffed with cards and gifts. A child gazes out the window at ice skaters on a pond—another sits on a toy box watching Santa take flight. The connection between featured letters and images could be stronger in places. For instance, the letter "C" represents "Christmas" but the corresponding image is the baby Jesus. In places, the illustrations feel dated in less than desirable ways, the most glaring being the lack of racial diversity. Parents sensitive to firearms should be forewarned of the depiction of several toy revolvers and a rifle as presents. Reviewer: Katie Kemple
