Overview

One Christmas Eve, Cub leaves his parents in their snugly den to go exploring. He follows his nose, which leads him over a hill to a big, bright hole in the snow. Who lives down there? Cub wondered...

When Cub accidentally falls into Santa's workshop, it is the start of a wonderful adventure! Cub is shown the whole Christmas present process—from the mail room to the wrapping room—with a tantalizing stop in the toy-testing room. But when it is time to leave, Santa gives him the best present of all!

Paul and Henrietta Stickland live with their five boys in Dorset, England. Paul is a well-known illustrator and pop-up engineer who is famous for his books on machinery and dinosaurs. One of these books, Dinosaur Roar! has sold more than a million copies. As well as bringing up her children, Henrietta runs her own publishing company and writes picture books.

Unable to sleep, a young bear stumbles into Santa's workshop and helps with the preparations for the busiest night of the year.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The text is uninspired and the miniature pictures crammed with images of Santa and his North Pole workshop. It may appeal to kids, but it sure won't appeal to an adult trying to read the tiny print. 1996 (orig.
Ilene Cooper
The art's the thing here, and there's so much to see that children will want to pore over this before and after Christmas. The hook on which the story hangs is the tumble of a curious polar bear right through a hole in the snow into Santa's study. Santa takes Cub on a tour of the property, and this is what readers will enjoy. The panoramic two-page spreads and individual panels begin at the top of the world and continue through the workshops, into the kitchen and the wrapping room (where long, colorful sheets of paper hang from the ceiling), and off to the barn. Best of all is the toy storage room. Dolls, bears, trucks, tops, robots--of every conceivable shape and size--fill the gigantic space. Talk about a kid in a candy store! Readers can plan their Christmas gifts 10 times over. There's no real story to speak of, and in the end, not surprisingly, Cub gets a ride home in the sleigh. But this is a delight to look at, like a Christmas tree sparkling with lights.
