Criticas
PreS-Gr 2-This poignant first-person tale told from the perspective of a young boy recalls one particularly desolate holiday spent on a migrant farm in Corcoran, California. Panchito wants a red ball for Christmas more than anything in the world, but he understands the family is broke. He is disappointed when he receives his one gift, a bag of candy, on Christmas morning. But he recalls the sight of his mother weeping the night before as she tenderly wrapped his gift. His father's gift to his mother, an embroidered handkerchief purchased for a dime from another down-and-out migrant, fills Panchito's heart with tenderness. The beautiful illustrations are done in a naif style, yet Cotts succeeds at infusing the characters with great expression, aptly portraying the emotions of the tale.

Children's Literature
Panchito's family must move again. This time, he has only been enrolled in school for three weeks. Before they leave the migrant camp, a couple in even worse straits than they comes to their cabin, hoping to sell some of their belongings. Papá tells them there is no money. Panchito is worried—will there be enough money to give him a red ball for Christmas? When Christmas arrives, he receives a gift better than a red ball—he sees his mother's face full of joy. The story is culled from the author's reminiscences from his childhood in California migrant worker camps. The emotional truth shines through in this spare story. Acrylic paintings add to the mood. The story is told both in English and in Spanish; my Spanish consultant noted one grammatical error in the Spanish text, and that it is a direct, stilted translation of the English rather than more flowing language. 2000, Houghton Mifflin, $15.00.
