All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Good Charlotte's popularity exploded in 2002, when the brash singles "Anthem" and "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous" catapulted them to the top of the punk-pop heap. Once there they couldn't be stopped, at least in part because they endorsed their pop side as much as their punk-derived image. When naysayers tried pointing out the music's lack of substance, Charlotte's irascible core -- tattooed brothers Benji and Joel Madden -- challenged them with the issue of "Boys and Girls," a vacuous yet irresistibly fizzy new wave-styled goof. The Chronicles of Life and Death, Good Charlotte's first post-fame album, uses that status as a loosely binding concept. The Maddens are unquestionably happy with their celebrity. But they've also realized that money won't always buy happiness, or heal their old scars. After an indulgent string section intro, the title track begins to the beep of a heart-rate monitor. "Money talks/In this world," Joel Madden sings the song's modified power pop strut. "That's what idiots will say/But you'll find out/That this world/Is just an idiot's parade." It's the jaded realization on the other side of "Lifestyles"' stardom-baiting. Whereas their previous effort was, with a few notable exceptions, boisterous punk-pop, Chronicles includes an echoing relationship-woe piano ballad "The Truth", the subdued "Ghost of You"'s synthesizers and vocal harmonies, and quirky keyboards and acoustic guitars in the lyrically bitter "The World Is Black" "I can't live when this world keeps dying...". Joel Madden has also matured since The Young and the Hopeless -- his newly developed husky tenor suits him well on the more introspective material, but can still belt out the rousing punk-pop choruses of "Walk Away Maybe," "Predictable," and "Secrets." The album's best track might be its greatest departure. "I Just Wanna Live" is a punchy blend of power chords, string samples, and disco beats that features Madden rapping in a Nelly-inspired flow. For all their well-crafted ambition on Chronicles, "I Just Wanna Live" feels like Good Charlotte's centerpiece, since it's spiked with rock power, but gets its soul from the pop life they lead. [The Chronicles of Life and Death was issued in "Life" and "Death" versions, each with a unique bonus track.]
Entertainment Weekly - Michael Endelman
The eyelinered band has taken a giant leap forward -- in instrumental prowess, and in emotional and melodic scope. (B+)

This CD is awsome. I love Good Charlotte and they did a great job on this album. The songs have so much feeling and you can tell the effort they put into this album. I would encourage anyone to buy this cd. This Cd takes you to the darker side of our lives , and spills out the truth.Their music has saved so many lives, this CD is no exception.

    not their best

i have to say that i bought gc's first cd when it came out and thought that it was pretty good, but this album dissapointed me. the songs all sound more or less the same, and they're boring. i definetly think this was their worst cd of the three. let's hope their next attempt is better.

    I'm In Love... w/ GC!!!

OMG! Yet another perfect cd from the best band on the face of the planet! The Choronicles was so good and deep. My favorite songs were ' The World is Black' and 'The Truth' I loved the Truth cuz it was a nice slow song. GC show the world yet again no band can overthrow them. To any GC haters, how could you not just adore them? Not only are they hott, but WAY talented too. I think the will continue to put out best selling cd's for many years... at least I hope so.

    I loved it!

Ok, I love GC, there's not many people who do. But I think this isn't their best CD but it's REALLY good. I really loved all the songs, except number 6, Ghost of You. I don't know why but I just didn't like it. But I want people to buy this CD! Oh and to GC haters, how could you! They are the coolest, tied with Simple Plan in my book. SHAME ON YOU IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM!

    Okay

There are two songs I like: "Ghost of You" and "Predicable." If you want to listen to Good Charlotte listen to their 2nd Album "Young and the Hopeless." That CD was great. This song's lyrics are okay but the music and the vocals don't line up. I don't like it. Perhaps it's a little "poppy" but do you know what people? Stop classafying music. It is what it is. There are happy and sad songs in whatever area of music you are looking at.

    GC ROX MY SOX!

"Chronicles" is by far GC's deepest and most intense CD yet. I love all of the songs, especially the fact that on one album their can be so many different kinds of music all from one band (the truth is a piano ballad, i just wanna live is rap, in this world is teenage-angst-y, you get it). GC is amazingly talented, and their lyrics are so honest. They really grab me, and I can relate to the things they say. Overall, Good Charlotte's third album, "The Chronicles of Life and Death" leaves nothing to be desired- that is, of course, what ever record the band is going to put out next.

    A DISSAPOINTMENT

I was 'introduced' to Good Charlotte from a friend when their Young and the Hopeless Album came out and I absolutely loved it. So much i even burned her other cd from them [their first one, 2000] I really liked it, it was a little poppy but some of their lyrics were sorta deep. Their first CD is great becuase it is just corny and fun listening to what they have to say. But their third album, chronicles of Life and Death, is a dissapointment (and this is coming from a good charlotte fan). All the songs sound the same and Joel (the lead) cannot seem to find the right note on some of their songs that sets everything off. (example: Walk Away) They were trying something new, something differnt. And to my taste, they failed. If you are a true fan, you either have this CD already and if you dont, you should buy just to hear em sing their hearts out... badly. If you are just starting to like them, i reccomend their oldest CD, its truely what good charlotte was and forever should be. Ill give it two stars becuase they tried. (even if they did fail)

    Good Charlotte SUCKS

This is the worst cd I've ever heard. Good Charlotte needs to put the guitars down and go on tour with Backstreet Boys and Aaron Carter. If you like punk listen to The Used or something like that.

    2 Thumbs Down

OK, OK, no offense to any of you GC fans(hey, you like who you like), but I don't know why people like this Good Charlotte band. The 1st CDs was OK (kinda dumb, though, not worth buyin') and the same with their others ones. My friend got this new CD of theirs and she made me listen to it, and I hate this more than the others! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I just I think this band is no good and their songs are too "popish" for me. Sorry if I angered any fans, cuz like I said: "You like who you like". But if you're new and have liked some of their songs, this is the CD of theirs you do NOT want to buy!!!! NOT AT ALL!!! This is 2 thumbs down.

    Good Charlotte

I got this CD a few days ago. I like the fact that all of the songs GC puts out are catchy and have a good beat, pretty easy to listen to in my opinion (of course, my friend would say differently...so I guess you gotta like the style of music). This was no different, it had the same catchy and lively songs...there was only one thing. I understand songs are written to express feelings, but I found this CD to have lots of really sad songs. Of course, the good rhythm adds more life and fun to them. But there were still sad songs about lots of pain. The Truth was a slower song, but this is definitely not a bad thing. I loved the song I Just Wanna Live, and it wasn't as sad as the other songs, but pretty much all the songs were catchy and enjoyable. If you are a GC fan, or you like the first 2 CDs, you should get this one. It is a little different, some of the songs are "heavier" to me then the other ones were, but this is a nice little difference.

    I loved it

Ok I am a huge gc fan and everybody hate me for it!! I just can really relate to every song on this album and love their new sound! my all time fav song is Predictable. The lyrics are so deep and the sound is great. I think that Walk Away (Maybe) is also a great song. If you like GC's earlier stuff you will love this.

    ***** definate!

This is GC's best CD yet. It has great songs, and I understand that they are being more realistic on this. Think back to 'Little Things' when they were new, fresh, and without hair-gel. They are beginning to realize that that is who they really are. I am proud.

    Honestly Horrible

ok, i don't care how many gc fans i tick off here, this cd is the worst gc album yet. the worst song is i just wanna live. if anything sounds like justin timberlake, that song does. two ballads on one punk album is just stupid too. plus gc seems to be trying to be avenged sevenfold. one plus side, this album has gc's best song yet, walk away (maybe). it is easily their heaviest song. however, that song does not make up for the rest of the pop/punk trash.

    Album of the year

Good Charlotte is by far my favorite band. Sure, I get bashed for it. This isn't exactly a band thats been accepted by critics or any scene in particular, but I love their music and there isn't a single song by them that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed since their first album in 2000. Each album they mature and implement new styles into their sound, and this CD is no different. Sure, there's still fun pop-punk songs, such as the title track, "Secrets", "Mountain", and the two bonus tracks from each album- but there's also so much more. A melodic hard rocker called "Walk Away", another hard rock song with suicide note lyrics called "SOS", a disco/pop/rock/hip-hop hybrid called "I Just Wanna Live", the electronica rock of "Ghost Of You", the Foo Fighters influenced lead single "Predictable", the piano ballad "The Truth", the Cure-inspired "The World Is Black" that has lyrics that could be about the state of the world, the anti-war ballad "We Believe" that sounds like its inspired by U2, and the dark, grungey "In This World". Theres something for everybody here, and with irrestibly catchy melodies overtop of catchy drumbeats, roaring powerchords and booming basslines- its just too sweet to ignore.

    nice

this album was ok, but i think the last one was definitely better cause it was more fun, and this album was all acoustic. And they went all high pitched in some of the songs. but all in all i think they did a great job. and joel sounded like the whole album was based on his ex. so go listen to the album, i liked at least 7 songs in there .....

    Third times a charm

The third album from GC is quite possibly the best they've done. They explore a litte more of themselves on this cd and show how much they have matured as musicians. From the intro to the final track you'll enjoy what you hear. My favortie track on this album is S.O.S., but all the other songs kick butt too. Now don't be fooled by "I just wanna live" Justin Timberlake IS NOT APPEARING ON THIS CD!! So if you like GC this album will be one you won't wanna stop listenin to!

    Good but not Great

This is a pretty good CD. This album is alot heavier emotionally than either of Good Charlotte's other albums. I do think that Good Charlotte could have done a little better with the lyrics to the songs so that they're not pointless but well thought up. Some of the songs beats are sickening because they just drone on and on yet all in all this is a good album and a "must-have" for anyone who enjoys this type of music.
