Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Composer Harry Gregson-Williams re-teams with director Andrew Adamson, with whom he worked not only on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but also on the Shrek movies, for the second Walt Disney film to be based on the series of C.S. Lewis' fantasy novels about the world of Narnia. Gregson-Williams is given full rein to create an old-fashioned movie score with a full orchestra and several choirs, and he uses it fully, coming up with big, soaring themes, galloping chase music, and calm, lovely slow passages, all to accompany the film's extensive action and adventure sequences. This is music intended to be a big part of the film experience, not only underlying, but also accentuating the emotional force of the images. It is not sufficiently memorable to live for long outside the theater, but it does an efficient job inside it. Also included are a few earnest pop songs, notably a pop
ock ballad by Switchfoot, "This Is Home," with hit potential. The enhanced content available by putting the disc in one's computer is actually found on the Internet, not on the CD itself. It consists of a trailer for the film and a photo gallery.

I've only listened to the 30 second clips, but they all sound amazing. I'm sure Williams will delight us all again with his brilliance.

I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase this in Walt Disney World several days before its general release, and I think it's absolutely fantastic. Harry Gregson-Williams has done a masterful job with this soundtrack, incorporating many of the original themes from "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" as well as creating new ones. It truly brings the story of "Prince Caspian" to life, and is a delightful journey back into the world of Narnia.

I got the soundtrack today, and I can say without hesitation, it is Gregson-Williams' best work since KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. In fact, I'm sure many people will draw comparisons to that film, but the composer doesn't forget to infuse his music with themes from the first film, which gives it continuity. It's remarkable to see how much Harry Gregson-Williams has grown as a composer. This is definitely a darker score, no doubt about it, but if you enjoyed the score for the first Narnia film, you do NOT want to miss this one. While there aren't as many flights of fancy here, there is plenty of action, stirring thematic development, and energy. Highly recommended.
