Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Arthur, a small mouse, lives happily in a village church. There is a church cat named Sampson, but he treats Arthur as a brother, so the mouse feels safe. But Arthur does get a bit lonely. So he invites other mice to join him in the church. If they do odd jobs, the parson will pay them in cheese. For a while all goes well, until one day during a service Sampson forgets himself and begins chasing mice all over the church. The congregation leaves in a huff, saying that the mice and Sampson must go. As the mice discuss their problem, a burglar comes to steal the precious church candlesticks. Cleverly the mice tie his shoelaces together and when he falls, they roll him up in a carpet and sound the alarm. Of course all ends well. In the thirty-eight years since its first publication, this tale has lost none of its charming appeal. The detailed ink and watercolor illustrations of varying sizes still perfectly depict the small English town, townsfolk, and church, along with the appealing cat and mice with their humanistic traits. The lengthy text, full of clever notions, is balanced by the scores of finely wrought, humorous visuals. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
