Introduction

Nearly a decade ago, I discovered a little-known study of three hundred of history's greatest minds. The researcher, Catherine Cox, found one common denominator among them: they all recorded their thoughts, feelings, ideas, observations, and reflections in a journal. I've kept journals since I was in college, but that study was a catalyst to instill the spiritual discipline of journaling.

Next to my Bible, my prayer journal is the most important tool in my spiritual growth. I never go anywhere without it, and I write in it all the time. I journal while I'm praying and reading, during messages and meetings. Whether I'm having coffee with Lora or meeting with a member of Congress, I'm writing everything that is worth remembering. Then at the end of the day or week, I go back and circle anything I want to keep praying about. By the time I get to the last blank page, I've got dozens of prayer circles in my journal.

I often repeat the saying, The shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory. We forget so quickly. The key is recording what God is revealing. It's a stewardship issue. The apostle Paul writes, "Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5). We can capture our thoughts via journaling and make them obedient to Christ by taking steps of faith. Every God-ordained dream starts out as a single-cell idea.

Journaling helps me pray with more consistency and forces me to pray more specifically. The act of writing out a prayer fine-tunes our faith and ensures we remember what we're circling in prayer. Too often we forget what we're praying for before God even answers and as a result fail to give Him the glory He deserves. Journaling is the antidote to spiritual amnesia. It's the way we connect the dots between our prayers and God's answers. Then those dots paint a picture of God's faithfulness.

So my simple advice is this: journal like a journalist. Document what God is doing in, through, and around you. This spiritual discipline will build your faith as you trace the genealogy of God's blessings, breakthroughs, and miracles to their genesis prayers.

One of my prayer heroes is George Müller, who cared for 10,024 orphans, established 117 schools, and raised in the neighborhood of $150 million dollars for kingdom causes. That is amazing, but what is even more amazing is that he never asked anyone for a penny. He trusted that God knew exactly what he needed, so he turned every need into a prayer. When he needed a pipe fixed, he prayed for a plumber; when he needed food, money, or books, he prayed that God would provide. It is estimated that more than 30,000 specific prayers were answered during his lifetime. How do we know? One simple reason: Müller kept a prayer journal.

Go ahead and start circling!
