Overview

A handbook for anyone who wants to learn about how to be active in local, state, and federal government, The Citizen Lobbyist shows how to have a voice in creating public policy. More citizen involvement is needed in our government processes to ensure the voices of the people are heard over the money of paid lobbyists, unions, and coalitions, both in Washington, DC, and in state capitals across the country. All too often, public officials seem removed from the people who hired them to be their representatives and fail to work on their behalf. This book gives a step-by-step plan on how to lobby elected officials about the issues you care about, offers information on how to plan a lobbying meeting for individuals and groups, and provides sample lobbying worksheets and resources to assist with finding legislative information and history. It is your go-to reference for being a grassroots activist and citizen lobbyist.

“It truly is a handbook for action to provide quick reference and a concise primer to get YOU involved in your government.”  —Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers (militaryatheists.org)

    Amanda Knief's "Citizen Lobbyist" is a must-have how-t

Amanda Knief's "Citizen Lobbyist" is a must-have how-to manual for any responsible citizen. Knief's experience as a legislation writer (in Iowa), a lobbyist for a public interest group, Secular Coalition for America (in Washington, DC) and now as the managing director for a national public interest group, as well as her credentials as as an attorney, all give her the right background and experience to give us all good advice. The fact that she can write clearly and effectively clinches the deal (probably her Mom's and some good English teachers' doing on that score).

Only people who care what the government--at any level--does to or for them need this book. But don't just buy it--read it. (I just hope all twenty-three Americans who disagree with me on politics or religion don't read it; I need the edge against them when it comes time to twist some legislators' arms and change some government leaders' minds.)

I've just--May 2014--reread this fine book, and it reminded me, again, about why Amanda Knief deserves her reputation as a writer of clarity and interest, a woman deeply knowledgeable about her subject. Reading this book is a pleasure and easy to do because of her writing skills. But don't stop with reading it--become the citizen activist it should inspire you to be.

    Well done, Ms.Knief.
