Children's Literature - Denise Daley
With the end of the Civil War came the end of slavery, but life amongst most blacks and whites in America was still divided. Southern states in particular practiced "separate but equal" policies that led to segregation and the Jim Crow laws. In 1955 a black women named Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give her bus seat to a white passenger. In protest, African Americans began to boycott the busses. This was the start of the civil rights movement; a movement to end segregation. In this unique "interactive" book readers are involved in three separate situations from this time period: the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas; the Freedom Rides of 1961; and life in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. Readers are presented with actual scenarios and they choose which action to take. Each action provides drastically different results. This book accurately and honestly educates readers by revealing some of the harsher facts that are often kept out of lighter tomes. Numerous photographs throughout the book support the various stories. This extremely enlightening and sometimes shocking book is part of the "An Interactive History Adventure" series.
