Overview

The Civil War era was a time of great tragedy and triumph, and for a diverse group of women it was a distinctive thread in their lives and their quilting. Quilters and historians alike will appreciate the timeless lessons shared through actual diary entries and 121 related quilt blocks featured in The Civil War Diary Quilt, from Rosemary Youngs, author of the innovative book, The Amish Circle Quilt.

This reference incorporates instructions, list of supplies, a photo gallery, and 121 quilt blocks inspired by actual diary entries from 10 women living during the Civil War. Readers meet a variety of women including: Mary Austin Wallace, through her stories about running a 160-acre farm in Michigan while her husband is away at war; 17-year-old Emma Florence LeConte, as she recounts the day the Union army set a path to destruction through Columbia, SC; and Rachel Young King Anderson, who moved away from Tennessee with her husband and children to start a new life.

In addition to the 121 blocks that make a full quilt, this must-have reference includes smaller projects that use the same blocks.

    A reviewer

Even if you do not quilt, this is an awsome book filled with actual diary entries from those women that lived thru the civil war. What a wonderful combination, the stories and the quilt patterns/pictures! The quilt patterns for that time period are wonderful.! Can't wait to buy the next book from Rosemary Young on this topic The Civil War Love Letter Quilt! Keep up the dynamic work Mrs. Young!

History and Quilts from the Female Perspective

If you are interested in reading about the Civil War from a female perspective, this book will fill that need. Excerpts from 10 women's diaries--northerners and southerners--tell fascintating details about their day-to-day lives as their loved ones went off to fight in a war that was supposed to last only 90 days. If you are planning on making the entire quilt, I suggest you purchase the CD that is available separately, as the book does not inlcude directions to piece the blocks. The blocks are six inches square, and vary in difficulty, many of which can be paper-pieced. Some applique included. A must for history buffs.
