Overview

The Comedian Harmonists were a German vocal ensemble from the 1930s whose inventive, mischievous, and occasionally even seriously unhinged arrangements were nothing if not joyous and affirming. This 22-track set, drawn from the personal collection of Timothy Massey, is a complete delight from start to finish, and includes such treasures as the group's amazing vocalization of the overture to "The Barber of Seville," a moving and elegant take on Duke Ellington's "Creole Love Call," the odd "The Old Ship Piano," and an imaginative interpretation of Johann Strauss' "Perpetuum Mobile." There's a surprise waiting around every corner and turn of phrase in these cuts, and it's impossible not to smile at these guys as they transform everything they touch into an exuberant gem.
