Meet the Author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was both a doctor and a believer in spirits, which may partly explain why his Sherlock Holmes is one of literature's most beloved detectives: Holmes always approaches his cases with the gentility and logic of a scientist, but the stories are suffused with an aura of the supernatural. Narrated by devoted assistant Dr. John H. Watson, Holmes's adventures were so addictive that fans protested the master deducer's "death" in 1893 and Doyle had to resurrect him.

William Shakespeare lived between 1552-1616, but his work endures and is enjoyed the world over.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was orphaned at the age of three and adopted by a wealthy Virginia family with whom he had a troubled relationship. He excelled in his studies of language and literature at school, and self-published his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in 1827. In 1830, Poe embarked on a career as a writer and began contributing reviews and essays to popular periodicals. He also wrote sketches and short fiction, and in 1833 published his only completed novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Over the next five years he established himself as a master of the short story form through the publication of "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Tell-tale Heart," and other well-known works. In 1841, he wrote "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," generally considered the first modern detective story. The publication of The Raven and Other Poems in 1845 brought him additional fame as a poet.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born in the German village of Hanau, Jacob in 1785 and Wilhelm a year later. Erudite, determined, and devoted to each other, the brothers enrolled at the University of Marburg, Jacob in 1802 and Wilhelm in 1803, both intending to study law. There they came under the influence of Professor Friedrich Karl von Savigny, who taught that laws are correctly interpreted by tracing their historical and cultural origins. The brothers adapted von Savigny’s methods to the study of linguistics and philology. Jacob and Wilhelm were also deeply affected by the German Romantic movement, whose emphasis on folk culture would inspire their famous fairy-tale collection, Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Stories), first published in two volumes, in 1812 and 1815.

Ancient Greek poet Homer established the gold standard for heroic quests and sweeping journeys with his pair of classic epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Jane Austen's delightful, carefully wrought novels of manners remain surprisingly relevant, nearly 200 years after they were first published. Her novels -- Pride and Prejudice and Emma among them -- are those rare books that offer us a glimpse at the mores of a specific period while addressing the complexities of love, honor, and responsibility that still intrigue us today.

Great for Gifts Or Just For Yourself

I have the Ultimate Collection, but some people may not want to purchase 10 books at a time or want only certain titles. All the titles in this Classics Collection which includes books of several works of each author, is a lovely addition to your library or to give as a gift. I love the titles they have picked!

    Beautiful Collection

I am collecting all the Barnes & Noble leatherbound editions. I started my collection with The Classics Collection. I love displaying these high quality volumes in my victorian home. I am delighted that Barnes & Noble is publishing more books! In the age of electronic books, it is nice to curl up and appreciate the feel of a beautiful leatherbound book that will passed down for generations.
