Overview

Jared Koch’s first book, Clean Plates Manhattan, demystified “clean eating” and mapped out healthy restaurant options all over New York. Continuing in the extremely timely topic of eating clean, organic, and well, his second book, The Clean Plates Cookbook, offers sensible, sustainable, and healthful home cooking for anyone interested in integrating good foods into their lives. It shows readers how to shop for the best ingredients no matter what their diet (omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans can all “eat clean”) and how to prepare food that’s simple and delicious. Tips and inspiration from chefs and nutrition experts appear throughout the book, and the invaluable resources section breaks down the recipes by category and offers more of his clear and useful shopping guides.

Clean eating is anything but boring: recipes cover beverages, breakfasts, snacks, inventive entrées, and desserts with things like Quinoa Carrot Muffins, Cracked Wheat Sushi,Wild Mushroom Gratin, Lamb Tikka Masala, and Cocoa Cherry Brownies.

“Nutritionist Jared Koch's 'The Clean Plates Cookbook' is as much a dietary game plan as it is a compendium of recipes made from natural, high-quality, and whole ingredients. The tips within make this book an excellent guide for a personalized, holistic diet.”

Library Journal
Health coach and nutritional consultant Koch’s “clean eating” philosophy seems to expand on Michael Pollan’s adage, “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” With cookbook author Hough, he distills 100 pages of coherent diet and lifestyle advice into “Five Precepts,” which direct readers to choose quality comestibles and plants over animal products and artificial foods. His simple recipes include U.S. and metric measurements, and icons denote vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and other options. Includes resources, recommendations (websites, books, and films), and sample menus but no photographs.

Verdict Readers who find prescriptive fad diets too difficult to follow will enjoy Koch’s practical and positive approach to healthy eating.—Lisa Campbell, Univ. of Michigan Lib., Ann Arbor

Who doesn't want good tasting, healthy food? That is what this book is all about. Now, I will be honest here, I'm not a huge all-organic, gluten free, healthy only type of cook. I do, however, try to cook healthier versions of whatever I cook when I can. My passion is Sicilian cooking, which does fall into healthier eating with lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood. I have always been against your average soy products, and it was nice to see a mainstream, healthy cookbook that isn't full of soy products. This book is so full of good information. It really breaks down what is good, what is not and why. It is not a vegetarian or vegan cookbook as it does have a few beef, chicken and fish--and even pork!!--recipes. I like that. I'm an omnivore, and the chances of me giving up meat are pretty slim. Cut down, maybe, but definitely not give up! The recipes are mostly quite simple. That simplicity coupled with good quality ingredients is what makes the dish. The Garlic Mashed Butternut Squash was so simple to make, but really delicious. It would make a perfect side dish for Thanksgiving. I was thrilled to find a recipe for granola using steel cut oats. I had been wondering how to use them in my granola, but hadn't found a recipe for it. I can't wait to try the Sauteed Shaved Brussels Sprouts with Shallots and Almonds. I like them roasted, and this recipe sounds particularly good! If you are already cooking healthy and looking for more recipes, or if you are looking to change to a healthier lifestyle, then this cookbook is for you. I highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book from Running Press for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love this cookbook! Not only does it give you great recipes( like the roasted eggplant dip which my friends loved) but it gives you practical advice for eating for your own body. I love the clean plates book and newsletters, and now I can't stop talking about the cookbook!

The clean plates guides are the best, especially on the iPhone and this cookbook is even greater! SO many celebrity chefs and amazing endorsements! These recipes are healthy and delicous which is rare for a "healthy cookbook". I think after reviewing all of the great restaurants in New York, they had high standards for taste! I would highly recommend the Clean Plates cookbook!

This is a great find. Clean Plates is such a fabulous resource, all they were missing was a cookbook! I especially love the meal planning recommendations. I can easily follow a schedule of delicious meals that contain all of the nutrients I need for the day -- without worrying about a thing!  Simple, clean, delicious recipes. Love it.
