From The CriticsReviewer: Corey Goldstein, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This handbook is a rapid review of medications used in psychiatric practice, organized into tables and a bullet point format allowing for quick intake of information. The previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose: According to the authors, this is a practical guide to the use of psychotropic drugs with content based on published information and clinical experience. This book is certainly needed. The book meets and exceeds the authors' objectives.
Audience: The book seems to be written for a very broad audience that could include psychiatrists, primary care physicians, medical students, and other mental health practitioners. By not expressly stating its targeted audience, the book is able to appeal to many providers. The authors are credible authorities.
Features: The book covers everything from commonly prescribed medications in psychiatric practice to those prescribed only rarely, as well as herbs and supplements. Included are indications that are approved and unapproved, administration, adverse effects, comparison tables, precautions, pharmacological effects on neurotransmitters, dosing, augmentation strategies, and patient handouts. Everything about this book is well covered. Of particular note is the way the book is organized to allow the reader to rapidly integrate information. The tables are very helpful.
Assessment: I have found this book to be invaluable in my practice. I generally keep it on my desk for rapid review, reference, and as a general reminder of the little things a good clinician cannot forget! The book is of the highest quality and I can recommend it to any of my colleagues. It is at the top of the list of books of this type. The patient handouts are another added bonus that one can use on a daily basis to feel confident that patients have adequate education. Because of the rapidly changing nature of psychiatry, a new edition is always warranted. It was truly a pleasure to review this book.
