Description: This is an update of a portable handbook that provides students, clinicians, and researchers an overview of natural treatment of over 75 diseases. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide easily accessible advice and quick guidance for the less complicated patient. This is an essential handbook for students of natural medicine who are learning the interplay between basic sciences and clinical medicine. This is not as useful for experienced clinicians and researchers who will find the information too general and biased.
Audience: It is intended for a broad audience that includes students, clinicians, and researchers. However, it is only useful to natural medicine students who are making the transition to clinical practice and need a portable book with pertinent information.
Features: This handbook provides concise guidance on the treatment of disease with natural medicine. Each chapter addresses a specific disease and is composed of several parts: diagnostic summary, general considerations, flowchart, therapeutic considerations, and therapeutic approach. A strength of this handbook is the use of flowcharts to provide guidance for integrative and natural medicine care. Students will use this flowchart to provide context and rationale for natural medicine interventions. As valuable as this book is for students and beginning clinicians, it is of little value for experienced clinicians and researchers. Supplements are presented as a primary treatment of disease and dietary interventions are biased towards a plant-based diet. A review of the literature will present significant cognitive dissonance on the use of supplements and a plant-based diet to treat disease.
Assessment: This is an excellent handbook for students of natural medicine. The flowcharts are of immense value for new clinicians as a reminder of the multiple therapeutic considerations for any given disease. The authors acknowledge the pitfall of "green drug" medicine and their discussion of eliminating obstacles to healing is a valiant move beyond the simple substitution of an herb or natural therapy for a synthetic drug. Unfortunately, the end result still feels like a "green drug" handbook.
