Overview

There is nothing more tragic than a priest in love with a woman.

Today's Catholic clergy stagger under momentous burdens: Emotional isolation, depression, alcoholism, pedophilia -- the list goes on. Writhing in a crisis of intimacy, priests struggle with love. They stumble, collared by how to relate to those closest to them -- their colleagues, their women, their God and themselves. Father Christopher Joyce, a middle-aged pastor, looks for the Divine in a hall of distorted mirrors, making God into his own image and likeness.

While growing up Catholic, Chris purges peccadilloes in the Confessional, vomits up his First Communion on the steps of St. Anthony's Church, mindlessly memorizes the Baltimore Catechism, and learns about passion in a steamed-over Ford, the locker room and sanitized classrooms where sex is a four-letter word. Tapped to be bishop, Father Christopher wrestles with blending the minister with the man, loving two women at the same time -- Angela and Holy Mother the Church.

Read an Excerpt

"Mark Twain once noted, 'God made man into His image and likeness and then man promptly returned the favor.' I have no issue with the Word of God. I struggle only with its reconstruction by man." - Father Christopher Joyce

"We need healers in the churches, not spiritual terrorists!" Dr. Stan Smith

"A priest in love. There is nothing more tragic!" - Father Christopher

"You just belong to a large fraternity of folks who've been shot by Cupid's arrows. When pierced by these missiles, forget about reality. We're lucky to be able to find our rear ends with both hands." - Dr. Paul Marchaud

"Where's the sin in taking joy in our God-given nature?" - Roselyn

"Some [relationships] evolve to becoming sacred connections between people that allow us to touch the face of God." - Dr. Paul Marchaud

"To forget our body while we philosophize about our soul is to cut ourselves in half. We are neither angels nor animals. We are both, mystifying and maddening in our complexity. Perhaps God was a comedian in creating such diversity within each of us, arming us with powers that can both create the Sistine Chapel and desecrate an innocent child. But however we were created, we will someday stand responsible before God in how we conduct ourselves, not as perfect beings but as creatures with feet of clay. Before that day, it will be important for all of us to learn how to deal responsibly with sex, intimacy, and each other.

Will Holy Mother the Church be our best teacher?" - Father Christopher Joyce

    Wonderfully Insightful

This wonderful book gives us insight into the bureaucracy of the Church and one man's struggle to survive--with his values intact. Frank Seitz has given a sensitive, yet realistic view into the politics of the Church and the torment felt by one of its own. He pulls the reader into the character of Father Christopher, and we can empathize with Father's struggle with his conscience. The companion CD, THE COLLAR, and the book compliment and complement each other beautifully. After reading THE COLLAR, I listened to the CD. I firmly believe that Frank Seitz's talents as an author and lyricist need to be discovered by the reading and listening public. The book is one whose theme will repeat itself in my mind with the CD's lyrics/music resounding in my heart. They are 'musts.'
