Library Journal - Library Journal
Paul Blackburn wrote over 1200 poems, and Jarolim has rescued 523 of them, working mainly with out-of-print editions. She includes poems from 1945 to 1971, a period when Blackburn became associated with the Black Mountain poets and gained fame as a translator of Spanish and Provencal poetry. Many of the poems, like ``The One Night Stand,'' dwell on sexual and scatological themes and a few, like ``The Once Over,'' seem sexist by today's standards. At his best, however, Blackburn raises notation to the level of art; his poems shine with precise observations, like the single fly that ``sits &/scrubs his front feet.'' Essential for larger poetry collections. Daniel L. Guillory, English Dept., Millikin Univ., Decatur, Ill.
