Meet the Author

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904)was a Russian physician, dramatist and author who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in history. While a successful writer, Chekhov once remarked "medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress." Born in southern Russia to an overbearing father, Chekhov entered medical school but turned to writing to support his family after his father declared bankruptcy. We won a Pushkin prize in 1887 and enjoyed a steady stream of successes until 1904, when he succumbed to tuberculosis.
