Meet the Author

Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) was an influential German thinker, revolutionary, philosopher, political theorist, and co-founder (with Karl Marx) of Marxism. Born to a wealthy and pious family of industrialist, Engels turned against the church and embraced revolutionary theory. After a journey to Manchester, Engels produced a series of articles on the working classes of England, which influenced his drift toward socialism. In 1848 he and Karl Marx published THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO.
