Overview

From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a novel of a woman who needs nothing, a man who sees everything, and the web of deceit, greed, and danger that brings them together—and could tear them apart . . .

When professional house-sitter Lila Emerson witnesses a murder/suicide from her current apartment-sitting job, life as she knows it takes a dramatic turn. Suddenly, the woman with no permanent ties finds herself almost wishing for one. . . .
Artist Ashton Archer knows his brother isn’t capable of violence—against himself or others. He recruits Lila, the only eyewitness, to help him uncover what happened. Ash longs to paint her as intensely as he hungers to touch her. But their investigation draws them into a rarified circle where priceless antiques are bought, sold, gambled away, and stolen, where what you possess is who you are, and where what you desire becomes a deadly obsession. . . .

Editorial Reviews

Lila Emerson is a budding writer who supports herself by house-sitting. While on the job, she adds variety to her quiet life by habitually indulging in harmless voyeurism. One night, spying on her neighbors with binoculars, she witnesses a homicide that law enforcement officials later assure her was the first half of a murder-suicide. Disturbed by the killing, she goes to the police station where she meets artist Ashton Archer, the brother of the man who purportedly killed himself. He believes that his sibling was incapable of such violence and is convinced that he was murdered. Together these newfound allies search for the truth about the crime and wrestle with their own emotions about each other. A full-length Nora Roberts standalone novel replete with romance and suspense.

House sitter and YA paranormal author Lila Emerson trains her binoculars on the apartment window across the way and sees a woman clearly pushed to her death. And when another victim is discovered, Lila is drawn into a sinister web of obsession and greed, quickly becoming a target herself. The brother of artist Ashton Archer is the second victim, and Ashton is also determined to discover the truth. As the couple work together to bring down the killer, their relationship deepens but so does the danger to them both. VERDICT A pair of strong, commitment-averse protagonists, vividly drawn villains—a classy, stunningly beautiful, sociopathic assassin and a soulless recluse, in particular—an abundance of Fabergé egg history, and a plot that keeps readers on edge add up to another classic for Roberts (Whiskey Beach), who lives in Keedysville, MD.

Really fun addition to the Nora library with a quirky heroine. Between her interesting job (house-sitting) and the mystery investigation, we get to tour a bit of NYC and Florence, Italy. Art, a tasty bakery, cute pets, and a secondary love story make this a definite keeper. Did I mention the stone cold killer? Plus, if Nora ever wrote the teen paranormal werewolf series her heroine is writing, I'd read it.

I love storylines set against interesting places. It's like taking a vacation. This is a romantic suspense full of interesting characters, the main one being free-spirit Lila who enjoys her chosen profession that allows her new adventures. Her latest adventure is of a sleuth. Riveting and fun.

The beginning of the book was interesting,as the story progressed I found myself skimming paragraphs &then pages. Much of the store was just too far fetched...disapointing to say the least for Nora Roberts

This story is one of my (many) favorites of Ms. Roberts, and it held my interest until the very last word. The characters are memorable, the locations and twists are exciting, the writing is superb. Thank you for this gift of entertainment through another episode of a personal growth-spurt, during which a lovely distraction was a blessing!

Great storyline, captivating characters with a twist of intrigue, romance and mystery, The Collector by Nora Roberts is an absorbing novel that will profusely delight fans of the author and cements Robert’s status as one of the most dependable writers of our time. The Collector follows Lila Emerson, a professional house-sitter and an emerging author, who is currently working on her second novel which is part of a series primarily designed for young adults. Working in an apartment in Chelsea, New York, gives her perfect view of the building directly opposite, and its diverse and varied occupants. With a binocular at hand, she spends much time studying the people, hoping to find inspiration for the characters in her book. What she didn’t realize is that knowing what’s going-on in those apartments will ultimately draw her into a whirlpool of deceit and danger, if nothing else. Her daily observation draws her to a young couple occupying a particular apartment, and keeping a watch on them one evening resulted in a totally unsettling view as a heated argument between the couple resulted in the woman being pushed out of the window of their fourteenth floor apartment, plunging to her death onto the pavement below. Horrified by what she witnessed, Lila informed the police whose investigation led to the discovery of the dead body of the young man as well inside the apartment, an apparent case of suicide. But Ashton Archer, the brother of the deceased young man who is identified as Oliver, is far from convinced. He refused to believe that his brother is capable of such ghastly murder and then taking his own life. As Lila is the sole witness to the crime, he enlisted her help in getting to the bottom of the matter. As the two investigated the case, they stumbled on a world of antiquities and crimes covered in a web of lies, deceit, and greed spanning many decades, and as they dig deeper, their own lives are threatened even as they get close to each other. With powerful network of operators up against them, will the two unravel the whole mystery surrounding the death of the young couple? How are they connected to the crime syndicate? The Collector is a gripping romantic suspense novel by Nora Roberts with doses of humor peppered all over. Readers will enjoy this dramatic and intense story which has characters that are truly fascinating. You will feel a tinge of sadness to reach the end of the story as this is one which you’ll want to go on and on, and on.

Not up to her usual standard. I found it boring and I skipped ahead a bunch of pages just to get to the end faster. It didn't hold my interest. Had a hard time staying focused. Kind of an unbelievable story line

This was a good read and I really enjoyed it last year.  Today, I was browsing new books, and see what I thought was NEW Nora Roberts book.  The publication date listed is 3/3/15, yet the customer reviews begin a full year before that date.  Barnes & Noble, PLEASE be more honest with those dates.  Some of us who read and purchase many books end up buying two copies of the same book.  I'd greatly appreciate Barnes & Noble being honest on the release dates of their products.

Beside the fact that there was a murder, which was interesting .... The main characters are all good looking all have talent, and have money ...... none of the four have any major flaw..A little to much like a fairy tale

A really great story! One of Nora's best (and I've been a fan for years). Now if only she could make her trilogy books less predictable :(

Disappointing. I always buy Nora Roberts books and usually read multiple times. This one is boring, predictable and forgettable....hopefully it is just a fluke.
