Celine Dion's first Collector's Series is just that -- a coveted jewel for die-hard fans. Coming just a year after 1999's greatest-hits-plus collection All the Way -- A Decade in Song, which combined seven new songs with nine previous hits, The Collector's Series Volume One is a more thorough compilation and a nice complement to the earlier set. Missing are All the Way's hits (including "My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme from Titanic)" and "Beauty and the Beast"), but in their place are such selections as "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," Dion's American breakthrough hit; "Tell Him," the yearning ballad on which she and Barbra Streisand play dueling divas; "Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore," from her French-language album; and "The Prayer," her saintly duet with Andrea Bocelli. The new anthology also includes a few tracks that are available for the first time in the U.S. Dion capably goes flamenco on "Amar Haciendo El Amor," but as her Spanish version proves, Eric Carmen's syrupy soft-rocker "All By Myself" es muy mal in any language. Keeping with the international theme is the up-with-the-people ballad "The Power of the Dream," which she performed at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. The Collector's Series Volume One isn't for everybody, but it's essential listening for those whose Titanic hearts must go on.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The title of The Collector's Series, Vol. 1 makes the compilation seem as if it's filled with Celine Dion rarities, but that's not entirely true. There are some oddities here, such as "The Power of the Dream" from the opening ceremony of the 1996 Olympics, but the album is really a way to fill gaps left by Dion's hits collection, All the Way: A Decade of Song -- the many duets, French and Spanish songs, and previously unheard in the U.S. tracks are here to pad out the running time. As such, it's a real hodgepodge, with singles like "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" and "Falling Into You" overshadowing the rest of the album. Perhaps casual fans will want this as a way of getting the glaring omissions from the hits collection, but it has too many inconsequential obscurities to make it easy listening for them. So, it does wind up being more for the collectors -- but even they will probably wonder why it couldn't be nothing but rarities, which would have served them better. A real mixed bag, then.

Celine Dion has been blessed with a wonderful talent, and she is using it the best way she can through her many albums. This particular album displays many of her hit songs during the years she has been singing as a professional. Some of the songs have memorable value for people around the world, such as ''The Power of the Dream,'' which she sang at the Olympics. ''Where Does My Heart Beat Now'' is special because it is the first song she sang to the man who is now her husband. She sang this for an audition to get a recording contract. This song is also special because her mother wrote it for her to sing. Other songs were taken off of some of the many hit albums that she has recorded, such as ''That's the Way It Is'' from ''All the Way,'' among others. The three previously unreleased songs on the album show that she still has many wonderful hits that are not known to the public, which makes her seem even more successful than before, to hear that she can not make a bad song. Dion has the ability to capture her audience and make people stop and think ''Wow, this is great!'' She is very passionate, and it is obvious that she has found the love that she so often sings of in her songs. This album is great for those who want to get an overview of a few of her hit songs and hear some wonderful new songs too.

at first i wasn't going to get this album because i thought it was just songs i've already heard.but there were some good suprises like the orginal verson of "if that's what it takes" in french "pour que tu m'aime encore". i started to really want to learn french at this time. i found that this song in french is almost completely different (word wise).the french title means "for that you love me again".it's even better when you know the english translation of the french verson.i bought all celine's french albums after this and i'm really glad i did.

Celine Dion certainly has a beautiful voice, and I have (up to now) purchased all her albums. I was thoroughly excited when I saw her last greatest hits album. How many artists put 7 new songs on such albums? HOWEVER, this ''collector'' album seems like an obvious attempt to squeeze more money our of her fans' wallets. How many greatest hits does an artist need in 2 years?! Why not make a more complete album the first time? Because then the music company couldn't charge 18 bucks for what amounts to 4 songs we haven't heard before--not necessarily NEW ones, just different mix, different language, whatever. I was disapointed in this. If she wants to retire for a family, good for her. Just don't try to fool anyone into paying for something they already have just to keep making money!

I'd call this Celine's collection of hits from all around the world. She has the talent to sing in 4 different languages, as made evident on this album: English, Spanish, French and Japanese. This CD contains songs you may not have heard of before, but everyone gives so much credit to Celine for singing her famous songs, like the Titanic theme, that they just brush aside masterpieces like these. On this album are 3 songs that have previously been unavailable to the American public, and finally, her Olympic theme she sang at the Opening Ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games is available on CD! The Prayer by Andrea Bocelli is my personal favorite on this album. This CD is for the devoted fan, but if you want her greatest hits, buy her 1999 ''All The Way...A Decade of Song.''

I give Celine 5 stars for this album it´s awesome it is a follow up from All The Way A Decade Of Song with samples of her greatest hits.On This album there are songs as Tell Him the powerballad with Barbra Streisand All By Myself in spanish very good and powerful as the english version i like both, and the Power Of the Dream a powerballad she sang for the olympics games in Atlanta in 1996 it is a great song very similar as All By Myself other songs are as Prayer with Andrea Bocelli,Seduses Me,Falling Into You 2 french songs from Deu´x and Des mont qui sonnent wonderful songs Celine is the greatest female singer of our time she is better than Whitney Houston though that Whitney was great in the early 80-90´s if you like Whitney and Mariah Carey you will LOVE Celine she is the best no other artist can blow as her that amazing voice of miss dion is incredible and she is one of a kind some people say that she is the same as Whitney,Mariah and Barbra Streisand but she isn´t.There is only one Celine Dion and she rules the planet.

I'm a Law Clerk student in Seneca College Newnham Campus and Celine is my favourite. I also have a voice talent and i started to sing her songs from childhood. She is a true artist with fantastic voice, the kind of voice that captures many people's hearts. Her songs portray a realistic view of the real life and it also brings out her serenity and her warm heart to people. I think her songs are a great mix of old songs and new songs that she came up. Wonderful mixture of songs. Very well arranged.
