Overview

With over 170,000 entries, the Columbia Gazetteer of the World is an authoritative A to Z encyclopedia of geographical places and features. Whether you're looking for the ten highest mountain peaks in North America, the major commercial crops in Brazil's economy, all the rivers in Southeast Asia, the former name of the city of Yangon, or the natural resources available in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Gazetteer is the one-stop resource for all your information needs.

First published in 1998, the Gazetteer now features new entries and extensive revisions to reflect recent administrative divisions in countries around the world. It also contains new maps, population figures, and an expanded glossary of geographical and geological terms. With its long history of accuracy and authority, there is no other encyclopedia like Gazetteer.

The Columbia Gazetteer covers:

* The political world-countries, provinces, regions, states, counties, capitals, cities, towns, villages, and neighborhoods.

* The physical world-continents, oceans, seas, lakes, lagoons, rivers, bays, inlets, channels, and streams, along with islands, archipelagos, peninsulas, atolls, mountains, mountain ranges, canyons, deserts, valleys, and volcanoes.

* And special places-national parks and monuments, historic and archaeological sites, harbors, ports, airports, nuclear plants, canals, and destinations of interest.

Editorial Reviews

Against the Grain
Another classic just got classier. TheColumbia Gazetteer of the World is a must for any library with aspirations toward having a strong, up-to-date geographical reference collection.
Bill Warren
Relatively speaking, covering the entire world for $750 doesn't seem quite so expensive.
Choice
Invaluable . . . . not only is there a new edition, but at a hefty 3, 578 pages in three volumes, it is nearly double the size of the 1962 version.
H. J. de Blij
A monumental work of astounding comprehensiveness and unfailing accuracy, an unmatched summation of the geographic contents of our world. . . . for data ranging from absolute and relative location to history and current population, from political status to economic prospects, from ethnicity to toponomy.
Library Journal

The term gazetteer is usually defined as a geographical index or dictionary, which is simply an alphabetical listing of places or physical and cultural features. More extensive gazetteers also incorporate brief descriptions into the listings. This authoritative A-to-Z work with a global scope is the latter. First published in 1998 and edited by Cohen, a noted political geographer and past president of the Association of American Geographers, this massive revision offers new entries and maps, updated population figures, and an expanded glossary, all reflecting the input of leading geographical scholars. The 170,000-plus entries cover political, physical, and special places, including monuments and historic sites. There are over 40,000 entries on the United States alone. The population figures are taken from the last official census or the most recent available figures. Taking into account the vast increase of the world's population, along with changed place names and colossal geographical changes, this is a significant undertaking. The length of entries varies from brief listings (e.g., Saint Kilda, a small island in New Zealand) to full essays (e.g., North Korea).
—Bobbie Wrinkle

If you have the budget, you can now replace your disintegrating copy of the 1952 Columbia-Lippincott Gazetteer of the World with this behemoth. For each of the 165,000 place names, there is location information (e.g., latitude, longitude, relationship to another geographical place) and a paragraph of text.
