Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Here a team of Columbia University doctors takes the reader on a somewhat academic journey through every stage of pregnancy. Topics en route include planning for pregnancy; choosing the right doctor; taking safety precautions; complications that can occur during high-risk pregnancies; and genetic considerations. Sidebars present practical and easy-to-scan information on subjects such as real versus false contractions. Special attention is paid to the impact of current issues, such as AIDS, on pregnancy. Though generally insightful when on clinical turf, the authors tend to oversimplify emotional issues, handing out reassuring pats on the back in place of critical evaluations of the often intricate issues complicating motherhood and fatherhood. Still, this problem is minor in a book that can generally serve as an instructive compendium of facts and a useful resource for brand-new and prospective parents. (Oct.)
Library Journal
Unlike many other books on pregnancy, the Columbia University guide is not arranged chronologically by trimesters. Instead, it is a compilation of chapters, written by physicians, devoted to the myriad aspects of pregnancy and childbirth. It begins with a section on pregnancy planning and concludes with recommendations on choosing a pediatrician. Sandwiched in between is just about everything expectant parents might want to know. A pleasant surprise is the information on infertility and genetics. The role of the father is prominently featured, and controversial issues are given balanced treatment. The Parent's Book of Facts picks up after the Columbia University guide, following the baby's physical, emotional, and mental development until the age of five. Crown expects to publish a followup Columbia University guide to childcare this fall.-- Ed. The information provided is clearly delineated by bold subject headings and the text is brief and concise. A ``What You Should Know About. . . '' column is displayed in the margins, complementing each chapter's theme. Excellent is not too strong a term to describe the contents of this book. It is an essential purchase for any library with an orientation toward health information and child rearing. Both titles are recommended.-- Kimberly Megginson, VA Medical Ctr. Lib., Fayetteville, Ark.
