Overview

From the author of the Mistborn series and a master of contemporary fantasy comes a collection of his four-book Alcatraz series, the tale of a small group of freedom fighters operating against the cult of Evil Librarians

On his 13th birthday, Alcatraz, a foster child, gets a bag of sand in the mail that purports to be his "inheritance" sent from his father and mother. The Librarians, of course, immediately steal the bag of sand from him. This sparks a chain of events that leads Alcatraz to realize that his family is part of a group of freedom fighters who resist the Evil Librarians—the secret cult who actually rule the world. Alcatraz's grandfather shows up and tows him off to infiltrate the downtown library to steal back the mystical bag of sand. The ensuing story involves talking dinosaurs, sentient romance novels, and a dungeon-like labyrinth hiding beneath the innocent-looking downtown library. With a seductive mix of offbeat humor, high adventure, and endearing characterization, this is a fantasy that will appeal to all lovers of the fantastical. It includes Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians, Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones, Alcatraz Versus the Knights of Crystallia, and Alcatraz Versus the Shattered Lens.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"An excellent choice to read aloud to the whole family. It's funny, exciting, and briskly paced. Best of all, the message it gives young readers is that a person's flaws—being late, breaking things, etc.—can sometimes turn into useful talents."  —Nancy Pearl, NPR, on Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians

"Sanderson unexpectedly draws everything together in an extravagantly silly climax. Readers whose sense of humor runs toward the subversive will be instantly captivated. Like Lemony Snicket and superhero comics rolled into one (and then revved up on steroids), this nutty novel . . . is also sure to win passionate fans."  —Publishers Weekly, starred review, on Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians

"The action is just as nonstop, the librarians are just as evil, and the quips and asides (and outright lies) that the author insists on inflicting upon readers are just as omnipresent. Fortunately . . . these are all good things. . . . Give this novel to fans of Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl and Catherine Jinks's Cadel Piggott in Evil Genius."  —School Library Journal on Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones

    Great read for kids

Sanderson's Alcatraz series is brilliantly written and innovative. Who would have thought that "being late" would be a "talent" (able to avoid bullets) or that "breaking things" would be a source of help as these young sleuths make their way through twists and turns in solving mysteries. Perfect for young readers who enjoy adventure, and a source of teaching youth that even their own perceived imperfections can be a source of help to them.
