I don't think the publishers notes hit on this point quite enough. This book teaches you how to set up *themed* tanks. I've found it difficult to find a one stop place to find a tank set up like say, an Amazon Backwater Stream. This book will tell you the types of fish and plants that would naturally occur there. Beyond that, it teaches you simple ideas for starting a tank from scratch. What this book lacks in depth, it makes up for in covering the topic from start to finish. That way, a beginner like me at least walks away with an idea of what they do not know enough about. (*like plant maintenance) From there you are at least able to know what subjects you need to do more research on. Final word: An end-all-be-all of fish knowledge it is not. But it IS an excellent source of information and ideas for beginners. A must have to those new to the hobby. Read this book *BEFORE* you set up (or even purchase) your tank.
