    more from this reviewer

For fans of historical, wartime drama.

It will come as no surprise to people familiar with Garth Ennis that he's written a series of war comics. What makes this particular collection so special? Well, let's start with the very, very in-focus look at characters first, and external conflicts second.
The three separate stories here were originally printed as three issue miniseries under the Battlefields banner. The actual battlefields are only the setting and the stories much more personal. The first of which, Night Witches, deals with an All Female Russian Fighter Pilot Squadron and how they come into conflict with a small Nazi unit heading into Russia for reasons they don't even comprehend.
The second feature, Dear Billy, focuses on a nurse who was raped and nearly killed by a firing squad. The story revolves around how she tries to live her life after surviving and the unsettling reality she has to face.
The final story, The Tankies, is kind of a Band of Brothers style story for England. We are treated to socioeconomic conflicts of England's different native sons as they operate a tank and encounter German units on the Battlefield.
If you're looking for some war fiction with good drama thrown in for good measure, I can't recommend this highly enough.
