Overview

From speed skating to snowboarding, bobsleigh to ice hockey, this encyclopedia book gives the medals tables, timings, distances, and scores of every event, and provides vital information on rules and scoring systems. But much more than a statistical compendium, the book also offers a wealth of Winter Olympic history, anecdote, and lore, bringing alive the most dramatic moments from the Games and celebrating the many extraordinary individuals who have competed. It covers each event, Games by Games, from the four skating events which first featured in the 1908 London Olympics to freestyle skiing and curling—including discontinued events. With the top eight placings for every event at every Winter Olympics, plus descriptions of rules and scoring for all 2010 events, and hundreds of anecdotes, from the astonishing to the bizarre, this is an indispensable guide for all fans.

This book covers the First (1924 Games) through the Twentieth (2006 Torino Games) - helpful chart for 21st Olympiad

I have seen an earlier version of this authoritative book for Sports Fans and know that those seeking a bit of background will not be disappointed. I bought it in 2009 and was pleased to have what the co-authors David Wallechinsky and Jaime Loucky have collected together. Besides coverage of each of 18 events/areas: Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Speed Skating (men), Speed skating (women), Short-track Speed skating, Curling, Bobsleigh, Luge, Skeleton, Alpine Skiing (men), Alpine Skiing (women), Cross-Country (men), Cross-country (women), Ski Jumping, Nordic combined, Biathlon, Freestyle skiing, Snowboarding -- there are Appendices for Winter Olympic Records and National Medal Totals. I remember previous winners in those events that had interested me. It is great to be able to scan and skim through the 322 pages -- however, a comprehensive index of all named individuals would have been also helpful or maybe a search engine / CD with software to make it a bit more accessible for those looking for different names and couples! Overall a quite helpful almanac type book for those who love to have an inexpensive reference to enjoy!

Four of five stars, to be sure!
