Overview

Seven discs of Stan Kenton? Well, the larger-than-life bandleader never did anything in a small way, so this voluminous presentation of just four years of his four-decade recording career seems somehow appropriate. Enormously popular in its time, if lately overlooked, the mid-to-late-40s edition of Kenton's band is now deserving of reexamination. First off: The talent was there. Kenton's sound depended on the creative contributions of superior arrangers and composers, and in innovative figures like Pete Rugolo and Bob Graetinger, the '40s band was blessed. The soloists were also out in force: Saxophonists Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, Vido Musso; trombonist Kai Winding; guitarist Laurindo Almedia, and bassist Eddie Safranski were among the first-rate players drawn to this imposing ensemble. And then there were the singers. Anita O'Day and June Christy were two of the most popular vocalists of their day, both exemplars of cool jazz styling. Laden with the grand epics that characterized the band -- "Monotony," "Impressionism," "Elegy for Alto," "Thermopolae" and, of course, "The Concerto to End All Concertos" -- the set also includes the hits that brought the band a mass audience: "Artistry in Rhythm," "Tampico," "Intermission Riff," "The Peanut Vendor," and the Anita O'Day feature, "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine." There's almost too much of a good thing here, but the ambition and fine-tuned execution of Kenton's ensembles remains stirring and, at its best, thrilling. A full recounting of Kenton's artistry will lead us deep into the next millennium, but this comprehensive set is a rewarding place to begin.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Documenting Stan Kenton's always controversial but never sleepy music, the seven-CD Complete Capitol Studio Recordings of Stan Kenton 1943-47 features the orchestra at a time when it was reaching its greatest popularity, evolving from using the artist's charts into the Pete Rugolo era. In addition to some unreleased tracks, there are also several rare sessions included that were recorded at the time strictly for radio airplay. Most of Kenton's biggest hits ("Artistry in Rhythm," "Eager Beaver," "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine," "Tampico," "Southern Scandal," "Artistry Jumps," "Intermission Riff," "Across the Alley From the Alamo," and "The Peanut Vendor") are here, as are many concert works. A classic reissue.
