All Music Guide - James Leonard
If you love Chopin, by all means, get these recordings. If you love great piano playing, by all means, get these recordings. If you love life and beauty and grace and love, by all means, get these recordings. Because these are, beyond all argument, the greatest Chopin recordings ever made. In the face of recordings by Cortot, Hoffmann, Rubinstein, Horowitz, and Michelangeli, among dozens of other great recordings made over the past century, is this claim not obviously ridiculous? No: great as those players were, Lipatti is greater: not greater technically, although Lipatti's playing is never less than perfect; not greater interpretively, although Lipatti's performances ...

No: great as those players were, Lipatti is greater: not greater technically, although Lipatti's playing is never less than perfect; not greater interpretively, although Lipatti's performances are never less than ideal; but great spiritually because Lipatti was a musical saint who beheld the sublime and whose playing and performances translated that vision into numinous visions of the eternal and the infinite. Is this claim, too, not obviously ridiculous? No. Listen to Lipatti's "Barcarolle," to its balm, its bliss, its blessedness; listen to Lipatti's "Nocturne in D flat," to its lucidity, its lightness, its luminosity; listen to his "Mazurka in C sharp minor," to its clarity, its charity, its compassion. Other pianists have played Chopin's music supremely well; Lipatti went past Chopin's music to the source of all that is good and pure and true. In Lipatti's Chopin, one hears the voice of God. Considering it's more than a half-century old, EMI's sound is transparent.

    outstanding

This CD is amazing. Dinu Lipatti is widely unknown and that is sad for classical music lovers, especially those that love Chopin. This is the best recording ever made of Chopin's waltzes.
