Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
An exuberant foreword by British racer Nigel Mansell opens this slim yet topically expansive update to the 2009 edition. Jones (The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Formula One) subsequently divides the book's content into four segments, offering a picture-rich subject history, driver biographies, builder profiles, and famous course descriptions. Sidebar insets contain annual world-championship results, while detailed time lines present subjects in historical context. Compared to Mark Hughes's Unofficial Complete Encyclopedia of Formula One, this volume merely mentions rather than fully profiles early racers like first British Grand Prix winner Henry Segrave, an exclusion that suggests readers be wary of similar omissions.

    'CLEAR AND BRIGHT??'

What I value most in an encyclopedia is historical accuracy. Second, I look for information that enhances my enjoyment of a hobby or personal interest. I can't tell you how much of this 'Complete Encyclopedia' is accurate, but I have found that the section that lists race-by-race, year-by-year results is not on target. How do I know? I checked the 'race day weather' shown for each of the races I have attended, starting in 1964. There was not a single entry that accurately depicted the weather at those events. An example was the entry for the race at Watkins Glen, on October 4, 1968: 'Hot, clear, bright...' the authors would have us believe. My brother, who was with me at the Glen that autumn day, remembers well how we dressed in four layers, brought ponchos, and still found ourselves cold, wet...but happy to see the late Jochin Rindt score a victory.
