Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"An essential reference for folklore collections, in an attractive format that's sure to appeal to young readers." Kirkus Reviews with Pointers
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In 1697, Charles Perrault published a collection of eight stories which was subtitled "Tales of Mother Goose." These stories have been loved by children through hundreds of translations and retellings and through thousands of artists' renditions. Clarion has produced a beautiful and well-researched edition of these favorite stories. Each tale has been compared against the earliest known versions with an attempt to keep as close as possible to the original text, yet making it rich enough to appeal to today's readers. The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Puss-in-Boots and Little Red Riding Hood are among the most familiar. Readers will be delighted with the less familiar tales such as "The Fairies", "Tufty Ricky", "Hop o' My Thumb", "Patient Griselda", "Donkeyskin" and "The Foolish Wishes." Complete with morals, these dramatic and witty stories tell of princes and princesses, fairies and monsters, and ordinary people who use their luck and common sense to vanquish foes and achieve happiness.
Carolyn Phelan
In his introduction, Philip gives Perrault his due as a folklorist who told the tales without "literary embroidery" and as a writer whose retellings are characterized by acerbic wit rather than by sentimentality. This volume includes all 11 tales attributed to Perrault, including his dramatic "Little Red Riding Hood," without a huntsman coming to the rescue, "Sleeping Beauty," in which the princess doesn't live happily ever after until she has endured bitter trials, and the bloody tale of "Bluebeard," as well as lighter stories such as "The Fairies," in which a good girl is blessed with jewels falling from her mouth while her bad sister is cursed with toads springing from hers. The illustrations, line drawings with watercolor washes in delicate hues, are well crafted and, in the best sense, pretty. Though they're a bit misleading, since the writing presents the tales "unprettified," the pictures should attract readers. The volume ends with a biography of Perrault, notes on the translation, and a page or two discussing the origin and history of each tale.

I read this book to my 10 & 12 year old children because I realized they didn't know all the fairy tales.. such as: puss in boots, bluebeard, etc... they actually let me read this to them.. it was not as exciting as i had hoped and i would have preferred not to pay as much as $19 for it, but my son says it was pretty good and that he could really picture the fairy tales as i read them to him, except patient griselda was pretty stupid because of the way the king behaves... myself, i liked donkeyskin the best.
