Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In 1998, Australian clinical psychologist Attwood published Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals, which quickly established him as an international expert on the condition. Here, he updates research in this rapidly evolving field, offering a wealth of information on childhood, college, long-term relationships, and careers. He gives comprehensive coverage of topics such as friendship, bullying, special interests, and theory of mind. Each chapter begins with a quote from Hans Asperger himself and includes firsthand experiences from individuals with Asperger's, including Temple Grandin, Liane Holliday Willey, and Stephen Shore. Particularly helpful are the "Key Points and Strategies" at each chapter's end and the detailed FAQs, glossary, resources, and references sections. Attwood writes, "I usually say to the child, `Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome,' and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking." His work skillfully brings together the current information on this fascinating condition and is an essential purchase for academic and public libraries. I Also Recommend:

    Great Book!!!

I final have answers to the many questions I had been asking myself for the pass seven year.what is wrong with my child? I knew my son was different at age two but could not figure out why. He is now ten. Before I could finish chapter one of the book I had this over whelming feeling of relief. I was actually happy to have answers to questions that no one could provide. This book is like my bible for understanding my son and what he has been going through. It has really brought home what he has been experiencing. The stories told by others who have suffered for year not knowing what was wrong, but knowing something was different about them really hit home. I went through so many emotions: happy because I finally have answers, scare because of what's ahead for my son and a lot of "aha" moments because the book explained a lot. It provides some great suggestion for parent and teacher on how to handle a child with Asperger's Syndrome. If your child seem normal on the outside but he or you think something is different about the way they think or feel inside read this book. It might answer a lot of your questions.

    A Useful Guide

Attwood has led the field when it comes to opening our minds to another way to look at this developmental disorder. Filled with scientific research this book is not without heart. Books on Asperger's Syndrome need to help the reader learn more but it is important to recognize that we are all part of the human condition. Attwood does a marvelous job in weaving together a useful guidebook to this complex disorder.

    Very helpful

As a parent of a child with high functioning autism, I have many books on aspergers and autism on my shelves and in my nook. I have referenced none as often as this one. This book is perfect for anyone who wants real information and not the latest fad diet experiment. It is divided into chunks that are easy to understand and the index is very useful for quickly finding a topic. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about aspergers.
