This is an extremely detailed, step-by-step handbook that anyone who's considering building their own home should read. From explaining the steps that need to be taken while planning to financial considerations to handling subcontractors, this book is a must read. Anyone even considering building their own home should read this book for a real look at each and every detail that should be considered and accounted for. The book starts by addressing why building for yourself should be considered. It delves into the misconceptions many have and assuages fears you may have. It also addresses the fears that others in your life may have and how they may discourage you. From there is tells you how to get started and helps you decide how much work you will need to subcontract and how much you can do yourself. The book spends a full chapter addressing financing concerns and budgets. From there, its a step-by-step handbook on how to handle electricity, heating and cooling, plans, layout, plumbing, landscaping and so much more. The book is a complete and thorough guide that you should read cover to cover and then keep handy as you will continuously go back to it for its hints and money-saving tips as well as its primer on sample questions you may ask a subcontractor. Due to its thorough nature, I would rate this book a 4.5 and recommend it to anyone considering building for themselves.

This book is a great starting place for someone thinking about building his/her own home. Although it reads like a college textbook, the terms used in each phase of building are explained in easy to understand English. From thinking about building to the final inspection of the home is explored in depth in each chapter. The information contained in this book can help someone decide if he/she is capable of being in charge or if he/she should hire a contractor. Each phase is talked about from what your dream home looks like and what materials are used including the use of "green" materials in several aspects of building the home. The locations where a home maybe built are also discussed and why certain materials may not be used in those locals. This book gives information on who you need to speak to before you start building. Along with what building codes you will need to follow and what inspections need to be done and when. Tips and testimonies sprinkled throughout the book help to prevent you from making mistakes that could prove to be costly. The checklists at the back of the book help to put into perspective the amount of time that goes into building a home.

The title alone - "The Complete Guide to Building Your Own Home and Saving Thousands on Your New House" - was enough to pique my interest. As someone who has always dreamed of building a home, this book gave me a real idea of what is involved. And it is a lot more that I would have imagined. This book is a must read for anyone considering a build. The money saving tips were outstanding. I never knew that you could get mini-inspections throughout the home-building process. The notes from the field were just as helpful. The most valuable part of this book were the home building worksheets. There are guides for everything from questions to ask contractors to working up a budget.

In this book reader’s learn everything from how to choose the location of their home to finding the right building materials and everything in between.
