    A must

The book that everyone wishing to write anything at all should read carefully. You'll find so many interesting facts especially about things you might have thought trivial but - as shown here - are essential if you wish to make your fantasy world work.

    A Great Guide to Fantasy

The Complete Guide to Writing Fantasy is a great reference guide for the aspiring fantasy author who is bubbling over with all the 'How do I' questions. It is also a wonderful resource for those who have been writing in the genre for some time, but maybe need to understand one aspect of the genre more than another. I personally found the sections on medieval food, medieval clothing and the sections on armor and combat very helpful. You can't go wrong with this on your bookshelf.

    Look elsewhere

I have read other books on writing and bought this one hoping to get a more specific idea of how to write fantasy. Now, this book isn't useless, but you would probably get more help googling whatever you need to know. Each section is written by a published author, and the book has two editors and yet there are more spelling and grammatical mistakes in here than in any paper I would have turned in in middle school. Small wonder that the editors for this one weren't asked to work on the next two volumes of this guide (even though the guide was their idea). Surprisingly, the writer with the most mistakes, Tina Morgan (an editor herself), is asked back for the second book. But a lot of the info she offers in that one is exactly what she offers here. Several sections end with bibliographies and lists of sites that might give further detail, but many of the URLs (MANY) no longer exist, and some give false information, so that I wonder about almost any information the authors offer. Honestly, how many names do you recognize on the cover? If you buy this book and subject yourself to reading it, you'll soon discover why no one knows them.

Great read for the budding writer

First off this book probably wont have very much for the published author but some of the chapters may still help.

Right off the bat I'll say that this book is great. It has plenty of info in it that you can put to work in your writing and worldbuilding. It has great tips on many different topics like weaponry, armor, magic, culture, and even food ad clothing. It's very useful and can be used as a jumping off point for your work and future research.

On the bad side the books starting editing is very bad. Lots of mistakes in grammar and sentence structure and I think spelling. Also the book has some web links in it that work but others do not which is a bummer.

All in all its a good read and I still give it 5 stars for its usefulness. Again it isn't for everyone though.
