After reading this book, I feel like I have the basic informatio

After reading this book, I feel like I have the basic information necessary for writing any type of fundraising letter my clients need. As a freelance writer, a book like this is very helpful! In addition to describing HOW to write fundraising materials, the book provides details about WHY certain elements of fundraising should be carried out in certain ways. Information like that, ultimately, makes the writing more thoughtful and consistent.

The book provides an organized, detailed process beginning with evaluating the organization and its donors through preparation for writing, marketing information, types of fundraising letters and the actual writing process. Finally, the book details a variety of writing tips, easily transferable to writing of any kind. That makes this book useful as a good introductory resource for fundraising AND a good general resource for writing of any kind.

Lastly, this edition of the book contains a CD including sample files, letters and resources that are easily customizable and reproducible for any fundraising project. Once you have this book, if you need to create a fundraising project, you won't have to start with a blank page!

NOTE: In the interest of full disclosure, I did receive a review copy of this book in exchange for agreeing to write a review.

Everything You Need to Write a Successful Fundraising Letter

I highly recommend The Complete Guide to Writing Successful Fundraising Letters. This book takes you, step-by-step, from developing a marketing concept to competitive analysis of what other groups in your arena are doing to the actual writing of the letter to donors. The author, Charlotte Rains Dixon, even helps you decide how to find your target donors. Dixon reminds the reader that people send money to your organization because of their own wants and needs, not because your organization needs the funds.

If you follow the preparation techniques described in the book, your fundraising letter will be almost totally written before you finish reading the book. This helps those that have a fear of writing as do the tips on what to put in the text of the letter and how to say it. The book offers plenty of samples of letters and even gives great tips for dealing with writer’s block.

The Complete Guide to Writing Successful Fundraising Letters for

The Complete Guide to Writing Successful Fundraising Letters for Your Nonprofit Organization was, I thought, very well organized and laid out in such a way that even individuals with virtually no experience in creating these types of letters would benefit from the information.
I appreciated the fact that the author took several introductory chapters to delve into understanding some of the foundational principles associated with nonprofit organizations: from Chapter One with its simple (though not simplistic) definition of just what a nonprofit group is to understanding target donors in Chapter Two, right up to Chapter Four, which led the writer to laying the foundation of a good, solid fundraising letter, the author really took the time to convey the importance of knowing what your organization is about before you begin crafting these types of letters.
What I thought was especially helpful was including the sample fundraising letters in Chapter 7; also helpful were the numerous writing tips in Chapter 8, which helped to explain some of the basic mechanics associated with a regular writing schedule.
My only concern with this book is related to editing, grammar, and syntax. There were many areas in which the sentence structure just did not flow; there were also sections where words were repeated; this was most noticeable on pages 179 and 180, were an entire paragraph was repeated twice.
The structural errors aside, I thought this book presented itself as a pretty complete package, and would encourage those involved with nonprofits to pick this up for their bookshelf – they won’t be disappointed.

    A great tool for fundraising

I'm a writer, and when a local humane society shelter was looking for grant money to upgrade its kennels, I volunteered to write some of the letters. However, my letters weren't getting a response, so I came online looking for a book to get some help and I stumbled across “The Complete Guide to Writing Successful Fundraising Letters for Your Nonprofit Organization."

I thought I was already a good writer, but I learned there are other kinds of skills you need to write those letters. I not only learned the "tricks of the trade" but I found out how to write letters with the right words to get some pretty tight-fisted people to open their wallets.

One thing I really liked was that this book has a CD-ROM, which I still keep near my computer any time I need to write a letter and want to adapt one of their letters for my purposes. That CD-ROM has been a real time-saver, and I think a lot of other letter writers will like this easy to use tool too. I've even loaned it to some friends, who have really enjoyed it.
