Meet the Author

Alistair MacLean, the son of a minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy. After the war he read English at Glasgow University and became a teacher. Two and a half years spent aboard a wartime cruiser gave him the background for HMS Ulysses, his remarkably successful first novel, published in 1955. He is now recognized as one of the outstanding popular writers of the 20th century, the author of 29 worldwide bestsellers, many of which have been filmed.

Sam Llewellyn is the author of several hugely successful nautical thrillers, including ‘Hell Bay’ and ‘The Iron Hotel’. An experienced sailor, he has sailed all over the world and now lives with his wife and family in Herefordshire.

    more from this reviewer

    The Navarone team is good and so is the writing!

    I had read and re-read the Guns of Navarone and Force 10 From Navarone years ago. I bought the collection to read the two following stories done by Sam Llewellyn. I enjoyed them both and thought, from what I remember of Alistair's first two stories, that they were true to his style and story lines.
    If you have not read any of these stories I think you will enjoy good old fashioned story telling.

    Excellent

    I first read "The Guns of Navarone" when I was around 12 or 13. 30 years later, I find it just as mesmerizing! It's a brilliant mix of history, action, humanity, inhumanity, and suspense. I hope Nook publishes all of Mr. MacLean's stories. I believe he inspired authors like Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, and Vince Flynn.

    If you like these books, you may also like the works of Helen MacInnes; a contemporary of Alistair MacLean.

    Gingerfur

    Gingerfur cleared her throat, ready to make a speech. "I must say, how touched I am...that we have got through a whole year without driving each other insane..." She wiped a tear from her eye, "And all that stuff, BLAH BLAH BLAH."

    "I would just like to say that I am so thrilled to-" Cinderleap•~• "STOP! YOU GIVE HORRIBLE SPEECHES!" She screeched, then she turned sheepishly to the crowd. "What was I gonna say? Oh yeah...erm, well, I'm not even going to try and follow up all your wonderful speeches!" She meowed quickly, and leaped off the stage, tripping and smushing her into the ground. Applepetal{•}

    Coconut

    Coconut~ "Very moving Gingerfur." Pushes her off the stage. "My turn." Clears throat. "It has come to my attention that this is the one year anniversary of our beloved Thunderclan. This is quite am achievment, because many clans have risen and fallen since that time long ago. I have not been here as long as some of you, only since we were located at LOL results, but I recall many fond memories here. Now I would like to mention a few people that have come to mind who have been lost over the moons. Checkerleap, Ambahstar of course, Greenwhisker, and many more I have forgotten out of my horrible memory. Thank you." Faceplants off the stage.
