EXCERPT:

"You don’t know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain’t no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. That is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary. Aunt Polly — Tom’s Aunt Polly, she is — and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before."

- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

"By the end of January, 1898, Clemens had accumulated enough money to make the final payments to his creditors. At the time of his failure he had given himself five years to achieve this result. But he had needed less than four. A report from Mr. Rogers showed that a balance of thirteen thousand dollars would remain to his credit after the last accounts were wiped away.

Clemens had tried to keep his money affairs out of the newspapers, but the payment of the final claims could not be concealed, and the press made the most of it. Head-lines shouted it. Editorials heralded Mark Twain as a second Walter Scott, because Scott, too, had labored to lift a great burden of debt. Never had Mark Twain been so beloved by his fellow-men."

- Biography of Mark Twain by A.B. Paine

    Mark Twain is the best

For pure entertainment value per page, you cannot beat Twain. These works are true classics of not only American, but ideed, all of world literature.

    Not bad

I haven't read through everything yet (and I doubt I will ever read Tom Sawyer again), but so far this collection is pretty sweet. There are a few issues with the layout, but they're easy enough to overlook. I like having such a variety of works in such a small package.

    Convenient Collection

Good way to own multiple books by Twain in concise, handy & inexpensive way. Enjoyed re-reading "Huckleberry Finn" for a book club. The biography's author is enamored by Twain, portraying him as a very sensitive, meek, caring kind of person. We got a different impression of Clemens a few years back when visiting Elmira, NY where the family spent many summers in the cool Catskills with the family of Olivia's sister, and their controversial home in Hartford, Connecticut. Information received on touring the home, outdoor study Mrs. Quarles built for Twain to write in while in Elmira, and museums at Elmira College's campus & one in Hartford, we felt him to be aloof, self-centered, quite egotistical. Apparently, he was quite devoted to his family, but arragant. When appearing before the English monarchy to be honored, he apparently refused to remove his hat or to bow. Still, those are observations about the author, not his works--which we still enjoy reading. Found this volume to be a good collection of his fiction.
